One of the biggest mysteries behind Level 5’s long anticipated revival of the Professor Layton series has been deciphering when the game will release. The game was originally slated to arrive in 2025 but was delayed to 2026 during last year’s Tokyo Game Show. Now, Level 5 has finally given us the solution to this puzzle as it’s confirmed that Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will arrive on December 10, 2026.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is the first mainline entry in the series since 2013’s Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy on the Nintendo 3DS. The game picks up from the ending of 2010’s Lost Future and follows Hershel Layton as he is summoned to America to reunite with his prodigy Luke Triton to investigate a mystery engulfing the town.
While the game was showcased again back in April and confirmed to be the series’ multi-platform debut, Level 5 was still playing coy with revealing the definitive release date for the game until today’s Nintendo Direct, where it was revealed that Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will arrive on December 10, 2026.
A new trailer was also showcased revealing how puzzles will be designed on single-screen hardware. One thing that’s not yet clear is if the game will receive an English dub, as the trailer primarily features narration instead of clips of the voice cast. Only members of the Japanese voice cast have been confirmed so far. The game will likely appear in another showcase tomorrow, as developer Level 5 is holding another edition of its Level 5 Visions series ahead of Tokyo Game Show.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam releases on PC, PS5, Switch, and Switch 2 on December 10, 2026.
