Konami shows off Rev. NOiR at State of Play

All things return to their roots in due time and that is true of Konami who is heading back to their JRPG roots with Rev. NOiR. They took to today’s State of Play to show off a bit more of gameplay and the world that players will step into.

The first teaser we had seen gave us just a bit of the story. We knew something bad was happening, we knew we would try to defy it. While light normally sounds like a good thing, we heard that lightfall would be the worst of things in the first trailer. We also knew our main character was refusing to accept that as an ending. Does that mean he survived the lightfall? What is his story?

A story trailer was released on the Konami YouTube channel in addition to what was seen on the State of Play. We know that our main character has received an ordinance to save many people and he plans on doing so. However, that seems to be all he is holding onto as much of his memory is missing. Yet he is making the decision to save as many as he can. Which it good as it does seem that there is something working against humanity as we hear “humanity’s destruction is inescapable if they retain their wills.” So who is actively against humanity and who will fight for it?

Konami didn’t quite release this information during the State of Play either. Instead we saw a mixture of story and gameplay, perhaps to get people quite excited. They remind us that those struck by the Lightfall turn into husks and die. They remind us that the combat will be quite action oriented. Truthfully it looks quite slick even to this fan of turn based combat. While the teaser had some combat that was specifically rendered for the trailer, what we see now was recorded on PS5 Pro. This allows players to get a sense of the combat and how it will look when the game releases.

The combat looks quite quick and smooth.

It seems that there are quite a few ways to fight with Asch seeming to prefer melee moves although there does seem to be some magic he taps into it. There are counter attacks and chain attacks that seem to also require players to have good timing on their attacks. It seems the combat will be quite engaging for those looking for fast action alongside deep storytelling. This is one I’ll be keeping an eye on for myself for sure.
