Unknown Worlds’ Creative Director To Dive Into Subnautica 2’s Development As Gamescom’s 2nd Keynote Speaker

Gamescom Dev is expanding this year’s programme with another keynote speaker, as well as revealing the categories of the Gamescom Dev awards. Anthony Gallegos, Creative Director at Unknown Worlds Entertainment, will join Amir Satvat as the event’s second keynote speaker and will talk on the development of the Subnautica sequel.

In a press release that went out earlier today, it details that Gallegos’ talk is titled “The Perils and Freedom of Making a Sequel to ‘Subnautica'”, where he plans to explore the idea of expanding on a beloved franchise while preserving what the players fell in love with originally. The intention is to offer “insights into sequel development, creative risk-taking, player expectations, and the balance between innovation and familiarity.”

Subnautica 2 has been one of this year’s biggest releases, reaching over 4 million sales within a week of its launch, and the game is still in Early Access. However, it has also seen itself caught up in more dramatic headlines, due to a complicated feud between heads at the studio and their parent company, Krafton.

Despite that, Subnautica 2 has a roadmap for the near future, and Gallegos’ keynote is likely to be interesting and quite informative to others within the video games industry.

The second piece of news included in the press release was the Gamescom Dev award categories, with the awards held on Monday, August 24th, on the main stage.

“The Gamescom Dev Awards will recognize outstanding creativity, innovation, and talent showcased at this year’s Gamescom Dev Indie Expo while also honoring exceptional contributions to the games industry through two speaker-selected awards.”

The Gamescom Dev Awards categories are:

  • Visual Excellence Award
  • Most Innovative Game (powered by Epic Games)
  • Most Promising Game
  • Best Sound Design
  • Ambassador of the Year (Speakers’ Choice)
  • Excellence in Game Design (Speakers’ Choice)

The winners of the two speakers’ choice categories will be selected by the gamescom dev speaker community in recognition of individuals and teams whose achievements have made a lasting impact on the games industry.

Several members of the GSC team will be attending Gamescom again this year, so be sure to check back for coverage during and after the largest gaming event of the year.
