In news we all saw coming, Sony Interactive Entertainment has made major job cuts to one of its biggest studios in Bungie.
In a blog post SIE released an internal email from Hermen Hulst, CEO, Studio Business Group, Sony Interactive Entertainment. The statement addresses these cuts and the difficult decisions that were made making them.
While we don’t have any official numbers on the amount of jobs cut it is a significant amount of Bungie’s workforce. Prior to the cuts Bungie’s workforce was somewhere in the neighbourhood of 1000 employees depending on which report you look at.
Despite not having any numbers Hulst says that today’s cuts are “affecting a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. There are also reductions across SIE teams that support Bungie’s operations.”
In a separate post on Bungie’s social media platforms, the studio spoke on the cuts. They admit that Destiny 2 has fallen short on expectations.

Where Does Bungie Go From Here?
While these cuts are significant it does appear that Marathon will continue to be a priority for the studio and for Sony. Hulst mentioned that “Marathon remains an important part of our portfolio, and we will continue to support the team as they build on the strong foundation established in Season 1 and 2, and as they work on incubation efforts for future projects.”
This is silver lining good news for Marathon fans as Bungie has worked hard to fix the issues plaguing the game since launch. While our reviewer loved the game giving it a 9, many players have been disappointed by Marathon so far.
What these new incubation projects are of course remains to be seen. Is it more Marathon content or something new? Time will tell.
For now though the focus should be on those affected by these cuts. The industry is facing an unprecedented time as budgets inflate and competition grows. We hope everyone affected lands on their feet.
