One of this summers worst kept secrets, Sonic Frontiers – Definitive Edition, for Switch 2 has finally been confirmed by SEGA to be real. And what’s more, the game is out today (June 23, 2026).
Over the last few weeks, several posts have appeared on social media of retail copies of the game appearing in stores. This, despite no official confirmation that the game was coming for Nintendo’s Switch successor.
Featuring improved graphics, as well as quality and performance modes, the Definitive Edition of the game includes the game and a suite of extra digital content, notably the Final Horizon story DLC. Included is the following:
- Sonic Frontiers game
- “The Final Horizon” story campaign
- “Sights, Sounds, and Speed” and “Sonic’s Birthday Bash” Content Updates
- Bonus in-game items (Explorer’s Treasure Box, “Monster Hunter” Collaboration
- Pack, “Sonic Adventure 2” Shoes, and Holiday Cheer Suit)
- Digital Art Book and Mini Soundtrack
More can be found on the eShop listing.
Sonic Frontiers has been available on Nintendo Switch for years, however it appears owners of the original version will not be offered any upgrade path to the Switch 2 release. This will be a real kick to fans as the eShop price for the game digitally is $49.99 USD. A Game-Key Card physical version will also be available.
If you own the Switch version, Nintendo Everything are reporting that Switch saves will carry over to the Definitive Edition.
Sonic Frontiers is one of the better 3D Sonic titles, featuring a fun open world which was great fun to race around. I played the game to 1,000 Gamerscore on XBOX and very much enjoyed the 15-hours or so that took. Sonic veterans like myself will know the 3D offering hasn’t been great in the last two decades, however Frontiers sits alongside Sonic x Shadows Generations as being among the best since Adventure – which we’ll likely never see a remake of.
Happy 35th birthday, my favourite blue hedgehog. Here’s to 35 more!
