Vanillaware’s 2D Action Cult Classic Muramasa Returns in 2027

During the Nintendo Direct for June 2026, we got the announcement of Muramasa: Revenant Blades, bringing Vanillaware’s cult classic to PC and modern consoles.

Vanillaware’s Muramasa: The Demon Blade for the Nintendo Wii and its PlayStation Vita port, Muramasa: Rebirth, are often regarded as two of the most underrated titles for their respective platforms. Muramasa is now set to strike back next year, as Vanillaware and Marvelous are bringing the game to modern platforms as Muramasa: Revenant Blades.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade made its debut on the Nintendo Wii in 2009 as Vanillaware’s only title for the platform. The game is a 2D action RPG in which players control one of two main protagonists through individual narratives, similar to the studio’s work on titles such as Odin Sphere and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. The title emphasizes strong hack and slash 2D combat, and received multiple standalone DLC storylines alongside the PlayStation Vita release.

Muramasa: Revenant Blades combines all of this content while also remastering the game’s gorgeous 2D hand-drawn animation to 4K resolutions. The game boasts six stories, each of which has received quality-of-life improvements to its battle systems. New modes have also been added, and the game will also feature a newly recorded English dub.

Muramasa: Revenant Blades also marks developer Vanillaware’s debut on PC, with the studio previously expressing disinterest in bringing their titles to the platform. This starts a precedent for titles such as Unicorn Overlord, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, and more, potentially coming to PC down the line if the studio has changed its attitude towards PC gaming.

Muramasa: Revenant Blades will release for PC, PS5, Switch, and Switch 2 in 2027.
