The Boldest Star Trek Game Yet?

Star Trek: Shadow Frontier may be the boldest Trek game in years, and Bloober Team is making it. The studio behind Cronos: New Dawn and the Silent Hill 2 Remake is taking the Final Frontier somewhere genuinely dark.

Paramount Games Studio has announced Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, a psychological horror action-adventure developed by Bloober Team. The game is heading to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam in 2027.

Players step into the boots of former Lieutenant Ro Laren after she crash-lands on a distant planet. Her mission is simple enough: answer a distress call and rescue an old friend. However, overtaken by a mysterious consciousness, the planet has other ideas. A planet-wide entity weaponizes the environment around her, spawning hostile creatures and burrowing into her mind with haunting visions. The more Ro uncovers, the deeper she sinks into a corrupted labyrinth where memory and reality blur. Veteran actress Michelle Forbes plays Ro, reprising her role from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Gameplay blends exploration, combat, puzzles, and cinematic set-pieces. Classic Star Trek tools play a key role. Ro’s Tricorder can scan and analyze the environment, while her Phaser handles both combat encounters and environmental puzzles. The tone of this game is deliberately mature. This is Star Trek filtered through the lens of survival-horror, rather than the optimism of a starship bridge.

The partnership makes intuitive sense. Bloober Team has built its reputation on exactly this kind of deeply atmospheric, psychologically unsettling experience. Layers of Fear, Blair Witch, and most recently Cronos: The New Dawn and Silent Hill 2 Remake all sit comfortably in that wheelhouse. Bringing that sensibility to a franchise rooted in curiosity and exploration is an intriguing collision of tones.

More Behind the Curtain of Shadow Frontier

Shawn Kittelsen, SVP and head of creative and production at Paramount Games Studio, also thinks this makes sense. “For Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, it was essential to partner with a studio that could both honour that legacy and push it forward,” he says. “We have full confidence in Bloober’s ability to deliver a game that does justice to the Star Trek name while bringing something bold and new to the beloved franchise.”

Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno added that the studio has long held a passion for science fiction. “By combining that passion with what we do best, horror, we’ve partnered with Paramount to create something truly unique,” he said. “Our hope is to honour the legacy of Star Trek in a way that feels both respectful yet refreshingly different.”

Star Trek: Shadow Frontier releases in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Players can wishlist the title now on Steam.
