Square Enix has announced a Dragon Quest event titled ‘Update from the Dragon Quest Team’ set to air tomorrow, May 27, on the series’ fortieth anniversary. The stream is expected to reveal upcoming entries in the series and possibly provide an update for Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.
Dragon Quest is one of the longest-running RPG franchises in gaming history, debuting in 1986 and defining the JRPG genre. The franchise was created by designer Yuji Horii with character designs and art from Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama and music by Koichi Sugiyama. The most recent entry, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, released in Japan in 2017 and worldwide a year later, and was followed with the announcement of a sequel titled Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate in 2021. Since then, there have been little to no updates on the game’s production.
Horii stated in a recent Japanese broadcast that the team will be making “an announcement about the next game” on May 27, alluding to an anniversary event similar to the one that Dragon Quest XII was initially announced in all the way back in 2021. Now, Square Enix has confirmed this with the ominously titled ‘Update from the Dragon Quest Team’ event scheduled for 6am PT/9am ET/2pm BST on May 27.
While Dragon Quest XII is overdue an update given the almost five year gap since its reveal, it is possible that Square Enix may have more in store for Dragon Quest fans this year. The original Erdrick trilogy just received the HD-2D remake treatment and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined revived the original PlayStation debut for the series, so it wouldn’t be too shocking if the Zenitihan trilogy consisting of Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI, were next up to receive remakes, or even the beloved PS2 entry Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.
There’s also room for one of the various spin-off series to make a return. Dragon Quest Builders has received some attention recently due to its influence on Omega Force’s Pokémon Pokopia, so it could be a good time to strike on some renewed interest in the life-sim series. It’s also been nine years since the last Dragon Quest Heroes entry, so perhaps it’s time for another action RPG entry too.
Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate is currently in development.
