Additional Price Hikes Coming to PS Plus Subscriptions

We’re getting some more news following Sony’s announcement that PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) prices would be increasing. Earlier this week, Sony noted that prices would be rising in selected regions across the globe.

This initial announcement cited “ongoing market conditions” which necessitated the price hikes. These increases, however, were not slated to impact:

  • Existing subscribers (excluding subscription lapses/changes); and
  • Residents of Turkey and India

The announcement also had the caveat that prices “will start at” – leaving that door open as to whether we might see even more increases to other tiers. The general consensus is that these prices “starting at” were referring to the PS Plus Essential tier – the bottom rung of the PS Plus tiers. These changes were scheduled to go into effect on May 20th – yesterday.

So…What’s Actually Increasing Then?

The Internet, while not always correct, was right this time. These price increases are being felt at all tiers of PS Plus, now that we have passed the May 20th threshold. Digging into it more, here’s what we have:

  • PS Plus Extra Subscriptions are now priced at:
    •  £11.99/$16.99 for 1 month; and
    •  £34.99/$43.99 for 3 months.
  • PS Plus Premium Subscriptions are nor priced at:
    •  £14.99/$19.99 for 1 month; and
    •  £43.99/$54.99 for 3 months.

Those are daunting increases, especially given the spiraling concerns of inflation and rising cost of living around the world. I guess our one saving grace here is that the annual subscriptions at all tier levels are remaining the same. Which given the current subscription models utilized by most businesses nowadays shouldn’t be surprising. It’s better to lock the customer in for the year than have them paying block-by-block. Is it cheaper in the long run? Absolutely. Is it a higher upfront cost. Also absolutely.
