One of the year’s biggest indies so far, Mixtape is a game that depends on its music. Featuring an array of licensed tracks that are intrinsic the whole experience, there had been fear that the developers may eventually run out of time on the music licenses, potentially leading to a delisted title.
Music licenses have often been the cause for delisting of games, including the likes of Rock Band and others. Fortunately, the studio behind, Mixtape, Beethoven & Dinosaur have confirmed in an interview with Kotaku that they paid for the games licenses “in perpetuity” – often referred in content usage terms as paying for an indefinite license. Though, understandably the terms were not disclosed.
Beethoven & Dinosaur themselves announced this shortly after via a post on X/Twitter:
We heard some people say MIXTAPE would be delisted due to music licenses expiring.

That was a lie.
Have a great weekend, everyone. https://t.co/C3VesfWPpz
This is a big relief for the video game preservation community, as being a digital-only release (at least for now), Mixtape could have permanently disappeared from store fronts in the future. Being such an excellent game – that we loved in our Mixtape review – this is welcome news that may even open the door for an extension of it term in Game Pass, where it arrived Day One just a couple of weeks ago.
Additionally in the interview, the title’s entertaining Creative Director, Johnny Galvatron talks about how they left a punk band to form the studio, and from there video games which heavily featured music were inevitable. As their second game following the excellent, guitar riffing The Artful Escape, we can only hope that we see more music-heavy games from the Melbourne-based team.
