At today’s gamescom LATAM showcase – you can catch up on all the news here – developer Lobo Sagaz studio have announced that their unforgiving action game, Gurei will be arriving on Steam this summer.
Inspired by Japanese cinema and featuring characters from Japanese mythology, Gurei will allow players to tackle some seriously tough looking bosses in their own chosen order as the game arrives on July 23, 2026.
With combat that appears to have clear influence from Hollow Knight, but with an entirely unique moveset, protagonist Rei will learn a new skill each time she defeats a Kami – one of the games bosses.
Fans of Elden Ring may find this more approachable than Hollow Knight, as if you’re struggling with a specific boss battle you can always return later with new moves in your locker.
Though, rather than the bosses be a standard difficulty, their challenge evolves based on the path you have taken and foes you have felled to that point. The developers say that the very same first boss in one playthrough, could also be the final most challenging Kami to tackle in another.

There will be lore and a deep story to the game too. As you defeat the Kami, Rei will absorb their power and personality. They will then speak to Rei about their surroundings, giving more story to the game. Lobo Sagaz tease that the absorbed Kami may be helpful, or they may not.
A demo is now available on Steam if you want to check the game out. This is one to watch for fans of challenging action games or platformers.
