Hold on to your hats, and say goodbye to your cash, the Steam Controller officially launches next week!
Valve has confirmed that the long awaited Steam Controller will be available to purchase from 4 May 2026. Priced at $149 Candian / $99 US / £85 / €99 the Steam Controller promises a wealth of features and modern tech that hopefully justifies it’s price.
The Steam Controller was announced last November, alongside the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame. Valve have yet to give any further information on release dates or prices for these products.
Not to be Mist?
The Steam Controller is built to work with every game in your Steam library, however you want to play. It is compatible with PCs, laptops and the upcoming Steam Machine and Steam Frame. It has the usual inputs you’d expect from a controller, but with a few extra fancy bits too.
- “Next-generation magnetic thumbsticks with TMR technology” – they’re designed to have improved feel, responsiveness, and durability.
- All the magnets – as well as magnetic thumbsticks the controller is charged via the puck. This also connects to your device as a fast and stable connection for the controller.
- Trackpads – acting as a replacement for a mouse feel, Valve promise them to be highly precise and customisable. Using Steam Input you have the option to map them as other things such as button clusters, joysticks, and virtual menus.
- Gyros – highly precise sensors detect the rotation of the Steam Controller which means you can use the controller for aiming, control cameras, or use it as a steering wheel.
- Grip Sense – there are ‘capacitive touch sensors’ that know when you’re holding the handles. You can use these to activate or deactivate the gyros, allowing you to reset your comfort zone. You can map it too, Valve gives the example of opening menus, or pausing the game when you the controller down (because your hands aren’t on the sensors anymore).
- Grip Buttons – these give you four extra buttons to map however you like. Valve suggest they are most useful when mapped to ABXY, meaning you never have to move your thumb off the right stick or trackpad.
- Steam Input – is a menu system that lets you customise the inputs for the Steam Controller. The Steam Controller will come pre-populated with thousands of game-specific configurations from the Steam community. You can make and share your own too.

You can purchase the Steam Controller from 4 May 2026 from the Steam store page and any other participating retailers.
