High Above Review

Make yourself at home in High Above, a relaxing rooftop sandbox where your imagination and creativity set the pace. No time limits, just boundless ways to build and decorate your very own rooftop oasis. With a myriad of props, appealing details and endless possibilities, High Above by solo developer DVision Games, is one to visit again and again.

Gameplay

High Above is a relaxing sandbox all about creating serene rooftops havens. With four different themes to choose from, the possibilities for creativity are limitless. Build a sun filled rooftop garden, or greet the day with a sunrise yoga studio. How about a moonlit sushi dinner, or a grungy loading dock.

Start by building the base for your rooftop. Stack and layer your foundations to create different levels to your rooftop. Bring flair with a platform or swimming pool. Added structures like greenhouses bring nature to even the tallest of skyscrapers. Make your structure realistic with windows, doors, balconies and more. Surround your building with parallel buildings, overpasses, or even clouds.

Like the icing on a cake, elevate your space to complement the view. Bring your dream rooftop to life with thoughtfully chosen décor, props, and plants. Expand the space with furniture, lights, even pergolas. Add some clutter like books, food, accessories. The walls need some love too, place stairs and ladders, even laundry lines and string lights. Place plants in your greenhouse, ivy around doorways, or sprinkle potted plants and make a green oasis.

Finally you have the choice of adding people to your scene. They can sit on furniture, interact with certain items, or look pensively over scene you’ve made.

Prompts and Free Play

With so many possibilities in High Above, It’s easy to feel unsure about where to begin. Each of the four themes have ability to play in free mode but also their own prompts to help get creativity flowing. Prompts have an overall theme with build objectives, people’s personal wishes, and a limited budget. There are so many ways to approach each task, and with replayability you can attack them differently each time. You also have no timer, so complete at your own pace. Finishing a prompt will unlock the next, as well as new objects to use in other builds.

In free play, the world is your oyster. There are no budgets or boundaries to what you can make.

Customization

While High Above doesn’t offer complete freedom in customizing objects, it still provides plenty of options for personalization. Depending on the theme you select, different customization options become available. Elements like paint colors, brick aging, roofs, and molding are just a few of the features you can adjust.

Environment options can also be customized. Players can choose the time of day, weather and appearance of birds. Time of day can be chosen by the wheel on the bottom left corner. You can also cycle the time, and its speed. For weather you can choose to add wind and rain as well as their sounds. Players have the ability to toggle on and off music, wind, environmental, and evening noises. The toggles can be found by clicking the music note on the bottom right. You can adjust sounds while in prompts, but time of day or weather remained fixed.

Tips & Tricks

Since High Above is currently a mouse and keyboard only game there is a bit of a learning curve for key shortcuts. If things feel a bit confusing, use the button with the paper scroll at the bottom right to open up the shortcut guide. Despite hours in the game, it was still something I referenced often. Specifically when it came to the greenhouse. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to place objects inside at first. (push the scroll wheel on your mouse) This also comes up if you deselect a building and want to edit it later.

High Above also gives you the opportunity to take great in game photos. Although no selectable filters once the camera is open, you do have the ability to make the scene pixelated or change from isometric or perspective view. Use the camera angles and time of day to capture the right lighting for your scene.

Sometimes physics can get in the way of placing something down. Sometimes the fix is as simple as adjusting the camera for a better angle. Other times you may need to move or remove objects that are in the way before placing the one you want. I still struggled a bit with the placing of some objects, but I feel this will flex itself out as updates to the game are made.

Final Thoughts

Embracing the nature of relaxing, High Above is one to find solace in time and time again. With so many ways to play and decorate, each serene rooftop is a little escape. No timers, just a quiet space in the clouds for your creativity and dreams to come alive.

You can find High Above on Steam for PC starting April 9th, 2026.
