After releasing each of the first 4 Dark Picture games in as many years from 2019 to 2022, Supermassive has taken it’s time getting to season 2. Now 4 years after being first teased, Directive 8020 is just around the corner. Yesterday Supermassive showed off a new trailer for the game showing the power of the PlayStation 5 Pro.
It’s almost weird to call a horror game gorgeous, but it’s pretty hard to describe the latest trailer as anything but. Supermassive has crafted a space world that is jaw dropping. In a PlayStation blog post that came alongside the new trailer, Supermassive helps explain what all were seeing with the power of the PlayStation 5 Pro.
Supermassive has taken advantage of PSSR which has been the talk of the industry of late thanks to Crimson Desert. With the power of PSSR everything is enhanced on the world of Tau Ceti f. The Dark Picture games were already technical marvels with how they looked, and Directive 8020 is taking it to the next level.
On top of the PSSR, Supermassive is putting a lot of effort and resources into ray tracing. Any horror fan will know that shadows and mystery play a big part in the suspense, and Directive 8020 is looking to go the extra mile with this.
“With advanced ray tracing, light behaves more realistically, bouncing naturally through corridors, reflecting off metallic surfaces, and casting shadows that feel grounded in physical space. Emergency strobes flare against bulkheads. Firelight flickers dynamically across a character’s face. Ice refracts light in a way that feels cold and unforgiving.
Realistic lighting heightens tension in every corridor. You’re never quite sure what’s hiding just beyond the glow.”
As someone who gets scared easily, I’m not sure just how much I’m looking forward to being more scared, but with how good Directive 8020 is looking I’m sure I’ll persevere.
We won’t have to wait too much longer to see how it all comes together. Directive 8020 releases May 12th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and PC.
