Long time fan of Diablo 2 have often wished that you could fight the Ancients of act 5 more than once per act. The Ancients are one of the most memorable bosses in Diablo lore, so it was always a shame Blizzard didn’t do more with them. Well with the Reign of the Warlock DLC fans finally got their wish with the Colossal Ancients. So what are they and how do you get them to appear? This guide will tell you everything you need to know.
If you are a longtime fan of Diablo 2 then the Ancients are nothing new to you. If you are new to them however they are essentially the final obstacle between you and Baal, the games ultimate boss that ends the game. While they never dropped any loot, you did get a massive influx of XP for defeating them and unlike other areas of the game if you used a teleport to save yourself, the Ancients turned back into stone and you had to start all over again. They truly are one of the most difficult bosses in Diablo 2.
With the Reign of the Warlock DLC we can now fight them multiple times if you find the right items to unlock the new battle. The Colossal Ancients are much more difficult than the regular Ancients as they are considered an Uber boss. Much like the other Uber bosses in Diablo 2 just getting to them will be quite the task and require multiple steps.

How To Unlock The Colossal Ancients
Much like most of the new content in the Reign of the Warlock, unlocking the Colossal Ancients will require you to focus on the terror zones, specifically when the terror zones are in the final stages of each act.
In order to unlock the Colossal Ancients you will need to collect 5 statues that can only be dropped by the final bosses of each act, Andariel, Duriel, Mephisto, Diablo and Baal. It is a bit confusing why they’d make 5 statues when there are only 3 Ancients, but I digress.

To make matters more challenging, these bosses only have a chance to drop a statue so you like anything else in Diablo 2, you may have to farm this quite a bit just to get the 5 statues. Luckily in your stash they are placed in order. So if you are missing the third statue for example, you know you have to farm Mephisto kills to find it.
With all 5 in your possession you can now pop them into your Horadric Cube and unlock the Colossal Ancients. They are in the same place as the regular Ancients in the Ancient’s Way, so head there and be prepared for a colossal battle!
Defeating The Colossal Ancients
The battle itself is quite difficult and unlike the regular Ancients will become harder to deal with each time you kill one. We won’t specify any specific builds here to defeat them as you should be able to defeat them with any of your characters if you have a solid build, but just know that it will be tough.
What order you defeat the Ancients in will also affect how difficult this fight is. Once one is defeated the remaining 2 gain additional buffs that make them even more difficult. Defeat 2 and the last one standing gains more buffs again and becomes that much more powerful. It really is the ultimate test for your characters build.
Which of the Ancients you leave for last will also determine what item you get when you do defeat them, so keep that in mind.
Loot Drops
As mentioned above, which Ancient you defeat last will determine what loot you get. The actual item itself is always the same as you will always get a unique Jewel. What Jewel you get will depend on who you kill and you have a 50/50 shot at which one you will receive.
- Talic
- Defender’s Fire
- Defender’s Bile
- Korlic
- Protector’s Frost
- Protector’s Stone
- Madawc
- Guardian’s Thunder
- Guardian’s Light
These Jewels will act much like an Anni, Torch and Gheeds Fortune, meaning you can only have 1 on your build. So choose wisely what you wish to put it in and use it on. They are quite powerful so they are worth chasing, plus its Diablo 2 so naturally you will want to try and collect everything!
With that, you’ve now defeated the Colossal Ancients and likely want to do it again for a different drop! We hope this guide helped you on your Diablo 2 journey to becoming the most powerful character in Sanctuary.
