Battlefield 6 Bringing Back One of Battlefield 4’s Greatest Maps

Battlefield 4 brings back some glorious multiplayer memories and much of that is owed to its incredible maps. Not only were the launch maps superb – The Siege of Shanghai, Rogue Transmission and Lancang Dam, I could go on. But, the DLC maps were too. Caspian Border may be one of my favourite maps in any game ever. And who could possibly forget the barbaric carnage that was the underground tunnels of Operation Metro.

With Battlefield 3’s Operation Firestorm already included in Battlefield 6’s launch maps, EA’s attention turns to Battlefield 4’s back catalogue for maps to bring back. The first in their sights is one of my all-time favourite BF maps, Golmud Railway. Golmud played brilliantly, with well-balanced areas for land and air vehicle combat, alongside Conquest flag battlegrounds for infantry.

This is how it once played, oh the memories:

Starting in Battlefield Labs, EA’s testing ground for new Battlefield 6 content, Golmud Railway will be a ground-up remake of the map which when released will be the largest map in the game. On the announcement, EA said:

“Golmud Railway is being rebuilt for today’s Battlefield, not simply ported forward. Our goal is to preserve what made the map so memorable in Battlefield 4, particularly its combined arms gameplay, while improving how it plays and supports Battlefield 6 systems. Golmud is planned to be the largest Battlefield 6 map to date, giving us the opportunity to expand gameplay on a larger scale.

We’re bringing Golmud into Battlefield Labs early as this will be a multi-session project. Through Labs, we want to test changes such as larger flight space, increased cover for aircraft, and other adjustments as the map evolves over time.”

It’s the right approach from the studio, who with credit, have been working very closely with a disgruntled community in the development of the base game. Simply porting a map to a new Battlefield which has new vehicles, classes and more could lead to a poor launch. After the period of testing in BF Labs, it will become a full release in an upcoming TBC season.

There is more on the announcement in EA’s social media blog post.
