FBC Firebreak Gets Major Update Including A New Roguelike Mode

Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind the Max Payne, Alan Wake, and CONTROL series, has released a free major update to their co-op first-person shooter, FBC Firebreak. The Rogue Protocol update also includes several bug fixes and other additions alongside the Endless Shift roguelike mode.

In a post published on the FBC Firebreak Steam Page, the Game Director, Mike Kayatta, explains how a run of Endless Shift plays out, describing it as “the most dangerous (and most important) work a Firebreaker can do.

“In Endless Shift, you’ll be tasked with descending into abandoned areas of the Oldest House so infected with Hiss that the zones themselves, along with all who dare enter them, become distorted over time.

During a Shift, your and your crew’s job is to clear as many waves of enemies as you can before becoming overwhelmed, collecting a new currency called Corruption for every kill along the way. Corruption can then be spent between waves to gain powerful new Enhancements for your Firebreaker and their equipment. The longer you survive, the more Enhancements you’ll collect, allowing you to create wild new builds on the fly each time you play.

Once a Shift is complete, you’ll earn exclusive cosmetics based on your lifetime kill count as well as over one hundred new Enhancements that can appear in future Shifts.”

Kayatta also mentions that players can take some of the Enhancements they earn from an Endless Shift run into a Crisis deployment to be used for powerful but temporary benefits for that one session. The Rogue Protocol update also comes with some other additions alongside bug fixes and patches. There are more cosmetics to be earned, new weapon inspection animations, and new objective randomisations for certain Crises.

FBC Firebreak takes place in the time between 2019’s CONTROL and the upcoming CONTROL: Resonant, scheduled to release this year, and tasks teams of up to three players to tackle dangerous jobs within the Oldest House. While the game has struggled in the last year to find an audience, the Rogue Protocol update, and in particular the Endless Shift roguelike mode, looks like the development team’s biggest effort to pull new players in.
