Two New Tomb Raider Games Announced at The Game Awards

In a somewhat surprise announcement (Because let’s be real, the leaks on Twitter have been rampant the past few days), The Game Awards has treated us to not only one, but two new trailers for the Tomb Raider series. One is a remake of the Tomb Raider classic, Legacy of Atlantis as well as a teaser for a new entry in the series, Catalyst.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst

Tomb Raider Catalyst trailer starts with an unfamiliar voice telling Lara Croft of her past deeds and the fame she has accrued over the years as the titular Tomb Raider. She talks of the Dragon’s Triangle, how Lara crossed the threshold into Atlantis, and the legend of how unstoppable she is. The trailer then reveals Lara in another seemingly impossible situation with no way out, faced with the usual soldiers and charismatic baddies we’ve come to expect. But we all know what happens next.

We get a glance at the staples of the Tomb Raider franchise: Her dual pistols and, most notably, a grappling wrist device that can be used to close the distance between her and those standing in her way. The trailer then takes a turn for the worse, as most of her adventures do, and we get a beautiful glimpse into how the parkour might look in the full game. The trailer ends with Lara escaping the temple before the camera pans towards snow-capped mountains in the distance. My guess, based on the architecture, would be the Himalayas, but time will tell where her new adventure will take us.

“Here’s an official description: “When the most notorious treasure hunters from around the world descend on the region, Lara races to uncover the truth buried beneath the fractured landscape and stop those who would use its power for their own gain. As the ancient world collides with the present, Lara must decide who to trust among rivals and allies to prevent a catastrophe and protect a secret that could reshape the future.

The expected release date is 2027.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantic

The second announcement from today’s show was none other than Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of Lara’s first adventure from more than 30 years ago. Originally announced in 2022, The Legacy of Atlantis will combine both the timelines of the classic games and the more recent trilogy.

The game is being built in Unreal Engine 5, and much like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, will revolve around sending Laura Croft on a new treasure-hunting expedition that will have her spanning the world in her usual fashion. Unlike Catalyst, this game retains the classic Tomb Raider look with the tan shorts and blue tank top. Fans of the original as well as newcomers will no doubt be able to experience the classic tales from a more modern perspective, as well as some new adventures that will fit right in with the Tomb Raider catalogue.

The expected release date is 2026.

It’s great to see one of gaming’s biggest icons getting not one but two new games announced, and we can’t wait to learn more about both of them in the coming months, so be sure to check back here at the Gamer Social Club for more news on your favourite Tomb Raider!
