In the lead-up to The Game Awards this Thursday, we have already had several showcases, including Latin American Games Showcase, Wholesome Snack: The Game Awards 2025 Showcase, and the Frosty Mini 2025 Showcase. The Day of the Devs Showcase finished earlier today, and among all of the enticing trailers, one stood out to us above all the rest: Soundgrass.
Developed and published by Soundgrass Studio, a solo developer, Soundgrass is a first-person, semi-open world sci-fi game focused on exploration, puzzle-solving, survival elements, and a full narrative to uncover. According to the summary on the game’s Steam page, you find yourself on an alien planet where the flora emits and reacts to light and sound, and must use your two AI drones to learn and master their unique behaviours. This short description doesn’t do Soundgrass justice, so check out the trailer below and see for yourselves.
As you learn to traverse and uncover more of what is happening on this strange planet, you’ll have to manage key resources such as air filters to breathe, batteries to power your spacesuit, and methane to fuel your jetpack. Keep an eye out for these resources as you explore to replenish and even upgrade your suit, which you’ll probably need, as not all plants are harmless. Some are attracted to sound in a “predatory or parasitic” manner, so you’ll want to be careful as you explore weird caves and alien temples.
The visuals and gameplay mechanics of Soundgrass are some of the most interesting and frankly bizarre we have seen in video games, probably ever, filling us with both a sense of excitement and trepidation. But its creator has more in mind than the game looking and sounding good. “In the game, you can respond to your personal AI,” says Marcel Enderle during the gameplay trailer, “leading to different endings to a narrative that debates life, death, consciousness, duality, and eternity, all from the perspective of music. It’s pretty cool!”
We like the sound of that.
Soundgrass is currently slated for a PC release, with no release date as of yet. Be sure to check back here at the GSC for more news on Soundgrass and other exciting Indie games in the future.
