During today’s PlayStation State of Play Japan broadcast, Square Enix unveiled a surprise demo for Octopath Traveler 0, the upcoming HD-2D RPG prequel to the critically acclaimed Octopath Traveler. The demo releases today on PS4 and PS5 (Editor Update: as per the Square Enix page published on Nov 12th, the demo is available on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Windows, and Steam), giving players an early look at the game’s expansive world and revamped mechanics.
The demo was announced at the end of a new story trailer for the game. Square Enix’s latest trailer for Octopath Traveler 0 shows the peaceful town of Wishvale celebrating the Day of Reverence; a festival centred around a mystical blue flame. Moments later, the town is attacked and burned to the ground by three tyrants: Auguste, Herminia, and Tyto. This sets the stage for a personal journey of restoration or revenge, depending on the choices you make.
Octopath Traveler 0 is set in the realm of Orsterra and introduces a custom protagonist whose hometown of Wishvale has been destroyed. The story centres on rebuilding this settlement, blending classic turn-based combat with new town-building and farming systems. Players can recruit up to 30 companions and form dynamic parties of eight, swapping between offensive and defensive lines during battle.
The demo allows players to play the first 3 hour of the game and showcases the series’ signature pixel-art style. The game also retains the series’ hallmark Break and Boost combat system, while adding new Path Actions and strategic depth. Square Enix confirmed that progress from the demo will carry over to the full game, which launches on 4 December 2025.
Octopath Traveler 0 will release on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
