Despite reaching nearly 150,000 concurrent players on its launch day, even Dune: Awakening is not immune to the ever-shifting sands of the gaming industry. Funcom, the Norway-based studio behind this sci-fi MMO, announced in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz that there would be coming restructuring to the company.
Funcom further cited Dune: Awakening being their biggest release in their 32-year history as a studio, which only furthers the sting of the ensuing content:
“The transition from development to long-term live operation, while also building towards a major console release next year, will require us to restructure our teams and focus our resources from across projects and studios. Unfortunately, this also means having to say goodbye to cherished colleagues.”
It was also noted by Funcom that these decisions were made in the interest of ensuring that its internal resources could continue carrying the studio moving forward. Specifically, via the release of new content, of new features, and further enhancements to Dune: Awakening. This will, understandably, be in relation to the game’s pending release to both PlayStation 5 and Xbox in 2026.
