Fresh on the heels of the excellent Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, as well as its just released DLC, The Order of Giants, MachineGames appear to be looking towards their next project.
Whilst it would make sense for MachineGames to follow up Indiana Jones with a direct sequel given its commercial and critical success, the Xbox Game Studio are keeping everything on the table. The studio who rarely miss with their releases - Wolfenstein: Youngblood the only real blotch on the record - have gone public to say that they've not forgotten the story of BJ Blazkowicz and would one day like to return to the series.
In a new documentary, "˜The Making of Wolfenstein' created in partnership with Noclip – who produce documentaries on the creation of video games - MachineGames shared background to the modern-era reincarnations of the classic FPS.
The documentary is very much worth a watch, however if you just want to get the comment from MachineGames on their thoughts for the trilogy, here's what Studio Head, Jerk Gustafsson had to say:
“We have always seen this as a trilogy. So that journey for BJ, even during those first weeks at id, when we mapped out New Order, we still had the plan for at least that character. Wwhat would happen in the second one and what would happen in the third one.
I think that’s important to say, becauseâ "”at least I hopeâ "”we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”
You shouldn’t take this is a definite confirmation that the game will happen, let alone it its in development. The greatest takeaway from this is probably that we know MachineGames haven't closed the door on a follow up to the exceptional Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus.
On a personal level, I love the modern Wolfenstein games. However, if we can get another Old Blood, I will die a very happy shooter fan.
