Whisper of the House Review

In the quiet city of Whisper Town, every corner holds a mystery, and a new story to discover. In Whisper of the House you are cast as a hardworking housekeeper helping townsfolk move, clean and organize their spaces. But as you go about your work, you start to find weird things are happening. Whisper of the House might just look like another cozy unpacking game, but beneath this seemingly wholesome game exterior lies secrets to uncover.

Finish tasks and earn vouchers to redeem for furniture.

Gameplay

In Whisper of the House, your goal as a housekeeper is to take on tasks given to you by your neighbors. Unpack their moving boxes, clean cluttered homes, set up new shops, arrange havens for your clients. Complete tasks and earn rewards to spend on furniture and other items to design a space of your very own.

Each morning mail with a new task or a newspaper will arrive. Read the news VERY carefully. There are clues mixed in that will help you uncover secrets. Like why does a number appear over the museum?

Request letters get sent to your mail each morning.

With the help of your robot Mark, turn cluttered and disorganized rooms into someone’s relaxing sanctuary. Your first task is unpacking your own home which is the game’s way of a tutorial. Each task is chock full of tiny details that give each place a lived in feel. Leave slippers by the bed, or a cup on the coffee table. Place objects where you see fit, there is no wrong answer.

Sort through keepsakes and memories of your clients, Whisper Of the House isn't just about aesthetics, but about uncovering secrets. Every resident has a story. Use clues from your work to help piece together forgotten stories and things left behind.

Good bot Mark helps you organize and unpack.

Customization

Most tasks in Whisper of the House give you creative freedom, and you are allowed to put furniture wherever you like. But, you're only allotted the objects you unpack. You cannot access your storage when in task mode. However, as you progress in the game, you're given unlocked homes to decorate how you please.

You're given tokens by finishing rewards, recycling objects, and just by luck while exploring the city. Exchange tokens for surprise boxes containing furniture, plants, electronics, decorations and more. With over 1800 furniture pieces and more than 10 layouts, create the home of your dreams. You can even change the wallpaper and flooring!

Walls, floors, and furniture are customizable.

Some objects are even easter eggs. Turn on a burner, squeak the rubber duck, turn on and off lights. The addition of tactile objects gives Whisper of the House personality and richness.

Whisper of the House also gives you the opportunity to take photos of your work. Add stickers or put on filters. Take pictures for your collection, or show off to friends. Be proud of your creation!

Community Feedback

I ran into a few bugs as I made my way through Whisper of the House. There were a few times where I had to go back to an autosave because loading into a certain task wouldn't allow me to click on objects, or leave in general. I was already into hour 7 at the time, so restarting the whole game itself wasn't something I was ready or willing to do. Thankfully going back a few auto saves fixed the problem (make sure you're saving along the way). Unfortunately, I lost an hour of gameplay to do so.

Thankfully the crew over at GD Studio is already listening to feedback for Whisper of the House. They've been actively taking feedback since the demo and have been working hard behind the scenes to fix bugs and listen to the community.

Music & Art

I loved the music in Whisper of the House. Each track, 10 in total, gives different genres of what I would consider lo-fi. As rewards for finishing tasks, some clients send you packages with records inside that you can play on your record player.

Along with the music comes the adorable pixel art style. This was so nostalgic and brought so much to the game. The adorable plants and furniture. And it definitely gave me Pokémon vibes running my character around the city.

Play your favorite tunes on your record player

If you enjoy games like Unpacking or Make Room, Whisper of the House is one to check out.  Whether you’re drawn in by the cozy unpacking and design or intrigued by hidden secrets, this game has plenty of both. But players beware, there's more than meets the eye. The only way to uncover it is by playing it yourself.
