Greta Sees Ghosts! Preview First Impressions

One of the most amazing things about video gaming is how far we have come in terms of design aesthetics. Games like The Wolf Among Us, Cuphead, and Unraveled prove that truly, anything is possible within the digital gaming world. Another such entry into this list is something I got my hands on just today: Greta Sees Ghosts!

Greta Sees Ghosts! is the foundational game from a little German-based studio called I Knew It! – Games. Greta Sees Ghost! has also just seen its unveiling at Gamescom 2025 and is slated for a release in early 2026. Gamer Social Club was able to get a sneak-peek at what I Knew It! Games has in store for us. Without further ado, let’s dive into our initial impressions of Greta Sees Ghosts!

The World and Story

In Greta Sees Ghosts!, the player assumes the role of Greta (shocking, I know). Greta is a lighthouse keeper in the North Sea Islands…who also is very interested in ghosts! In what we were able to play of the demo, Greta uses her magic oil lamp to help ghosts…move on from our mortal coil. But here’s the catch – the ghosts are quirky, chatty, and maybe not ready to leave yet!

The Gameplay

The gameplay for Greta Sees Ghosts! focuses around the exploration of the nearby islands, which will be full of little narrative puzzles for you to solve. This shape-based puzzles will definitely make you flex your brain cells. Successfully connect all the points within the zone of the ritual and you’ll be able to bring the ghost into your oil lamp.

First Impressions

Immediately, I was drawn into the art style of this game. I’m a sucker for hand-drawn art and Greta Sees Ghosts! does it so amazingly well, truly lending the quirky and unique nature of what the game promises to be.

Coupled with this cozy and inviting style is a soundtrack that truly captures the macabre and quirky nature of the world in which we’re in. What also reeled me in with the music of the game is the transitions between when we are simply wandering the islands, and when we’re in the process of our ritual. It works well, in tandem with change in the ambience of the world around us.

The puzzles that are presented to Greta, while not incredibly difficult, will definitely require those spatial skills. And I can only imagine one thing – they’ll get harder as the game progress. That being said, though, I did enjoy that the puzzles were reflective of the current story and included elements of what happened to our little ghost friends.

Greta Sees Ghosts!

We also meet two separate ghosts in the demo. Each of them have their own unique personality, as well as “need” for remaining on this plane of existence. Honestly, who knew that ghosts could have so many thoughts!

Final Thoughts

Greta Sees Ghosts!, in my opinion, is going to be an absolute pleasure to dive further into upon full release. I want to see more of Greta’s world and all the oddball spirits that still inhabit it! I will certainly be waiting for more details and updates from I Knew It! – Games as we hopefully inch closer and closer to the games release date!

Greta Sees Ghosts! is schedule for a first quarter release in 2026 and has a demo available on Steam today!
