The studio behind Disco Elysium, ZA/UM, has announced a new game titled Zero Parades during Gamescom Opening Night Live.

There have been a lot of headlines surrounding developer ZA/UM since the launch of Disco Elysium in 2019, and its expanded re-release Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, in 2021. Finally however, the studio has announced its latest title, Zero Parades, a narrative-driven espionage RPG.

The trailer sets dreary, a noir-tinged tone for the game, and teases mechanics dialogue and choice driven game mechanics similar to Disco Elysium’s, however this time the story will follow a spy trying to uncover a strange, seemingly supernatural central mystery.

The game’s Steam page reads “Brilliant, burnt-out, possibly cursed - you play as operant Hershel Wilk, alias CASCADE. Five years ago you led your team into the abyss and have been haunted by your failures ever since. Now you’ve been recalled for a mysterious assignment that may give you a chance to prove yourself again.”

Zero Parades’s annonucement follows some internal conflict at ZA/UM

As referenced by Gamescom Opening Night Live host Geoff Keighley during the show, the announcement of Zero Parades comes after numerous reports of internal conflict at ZA/UM leading to the creation of multiple spiritual successors to Disco Elysium from former members of the game’s development team. These projects have also been the subject of messy legal battles stemming from the split of the original Disco Elysium development team.

Earlier this year, ZA/UM confirmed the cancellation of multiple projects set in the world of Disco Elysium, and just recently released the mobile port of the original game to strong backlash from fans. It seems like some trust might have to be rebuilt before before fans fully take to this new project, but time will have to tell.
