Battlefield 6 Won’t Have Wild Skins and is Spiritual Successor to 3 and 4

Whether you love or hate player skins in online shooters, there's no denying that they're huge business for developers. Although not the trailblazer, Fortnite mastered the art of creative pop-culture skins in multiplayer games and with eye watering amounts of money, every publisher wants a piece of the pie. Especially greedy EA, right?

Well, according to Respawn and Battlefield Studios Vince Zampelli and general manager Byron Beede, the shooter will aim to focus on keeping the traditional military style of the game that fans love.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Zampelli said “We want to be true to Battlefield, we want this fantasy to feel like you’d expect of Battlefield, so that’s what we’ve been focused on.”

Beede who worked on Call of Duty - known for some wild skins as of late including pandas, rubber duckies and even Lionel Messi - was asked about the skin conversation for Battlefield and stated: “That’s a hard one to answer right? You kinda have to do things to let people differentiate themselves and be unique, so it’s how you do that in a way that doesn’t go too far. We don’t have to worry about that right now.”

Though this is positive for those anti-skin players, this is very much the story of today. Whether or not EA are keeping that message until the game releases, before adding in microtransactions post-launch remains to be seen. EA are notorious for their predatory processes in the microtransaction space, like in FC25 and will likely see Battlefield as a cash cow for the future, following what has been a very well-received multiplayer reveal.

This will help DICE keep the setting and aesthetic for Battlefield 6 as intended - to be like series greats, Battlefield 3 and (my personal favourite) Battlefield 4. Speaking an upcoming episode of Skill Up's Friends Per Seconds Podcast, Zampelli said "Being the spiritual successor to [Battlefield] 3 and 4 is how we look at it. What would that next spiritual successor kind of look like? That's where we started."

Battlefield 6 beta and release date

Overall, this is all reassuring for now. The game's visuals, style and gameplay all scream of bombastic modern warfare. Fans will get their hands on for the first time with the upcoming Battlefield 6 betas that take place through August 2025.

The open betas are available for all players across two weekends: 9 – 10 August and 14 – 17 August.

Battlefield 6 releases on October 10 2025.
