In case you missed it, there was a reboot to the Mortal Kombat movie series back in 2021. Of course the world was still reeling from COVID-19 and movie theaters were feeling the impact. Yet, the 2021 release still made over $84 million at the box office on a $55 million budget. It was also revealed that Warner Brothers had signed Joe Taslim, who played Sub-Zero in the film, for four sequels should they opt for a franchise. Turns out, we’re at least getting one of those sequels. The Mortal Kombat II movie has dropped it’s official trailer.
The trailer released today is not only self aware but also focuses on fan favorite Johnny Cage. Many remarked Cage’s absence in the first film and it seems now Mortal Kombat II will rectify this by bringing him into the tournament. Karl Urban plays Cage a washed up actor who feels no one wants reboots and it went out in the 90’s. Self referential much Mortal Kombat? While Cage seems initially uninterested, he does later join the fray stating “It’s showtime.” The trailer also brings us fan favorite lines such as “get over here” and of course “finish him.”
The marketing for this film has also given us another trailer. Although, this is not for the movie itself, but instead, the movie within the movie. Don’t believe that Johnny Cage has had quite a film career? That’s okay, the below trailer will show you his upcoming movie and name a few he’s been in while just quickly showing us the Mortal Kombat logo.
Based on the trailer we see so far, this sequel promises to be action packed and perhaps even bloodier than it’s first entry. Simon McQuoid also returns to the director’s chair for the sequel. McQuoid isn’t the only name to return to the franchise. Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, and Mehcad Brooks return among others as Sonya Blade, Kano, and Jax respectively.
Will you be running to theaters to see the Mortal Kombat II movie? How do you feel about an older Johnny Cage in the films? Have you seen the prequel just yet or is it just about time for a watch? Let us know down below!
