Like waves crashing on a white sandy beach under a clear blue sky, Sea of Thieves news keeps on coming. After seeing the reveal of Season 17, Smuggler’s Tide, at the Xbox Games 2025 Showcase, and getting the news that Pirate Profiles will be arriving alongside the next season in August, we just got the Sea of Thieves June 2025 Developer Update.
The Sea of Thieves June 2025 Developer Update video, hosted by the game’s Production Director, Drew Stevens, was uploaded to the official Sea of Thieves YouTube channel, or you can watch it below.
First up are some changes coming to the currently active Season 16, Reapers Rule:
- Players can break open Reaper’s Chests to summon Order of the Blade and Bone skeletons, either on land or on board a ship.
- More pillar locations have been added to the Search of Ancient Secrets Voyage.
- The Cannon of Rage can now be handed in as treasure to any faction.
- Skeleton mercenaries can now be found buried on forts to help players as they lay siege.
Commendations that were added to the game as part of Season 16 will not be adjusted, despite player feedback.
There are some “under the hood” improvements coming to Sea of Thieves as well, such as cross-region matchmaking. This allows the team at Rare to “expand the search outside of a player’s home region if a suitable match or server hasn’t been found.” With Fight Nights making a return on June 19th, this is sure to help players get into their matches quicker. The update also brings improvements to profanity filtering in text chat and addresses the Skull of the Siren Song respawn rules.

As a result of the team creating better game security for Sea of Thieves, learning which mods players have been using, they will be increasing the field of view cap to 110. Not only has this been requested by many, but the dev team also sees it as a great accessibility option.
That’s everything from the Sea of Thieves June 2025 Update! If you want to keep up with all the latest news for Rare’s swashbuckling multiplayer adventure, be sure to check back here on the Gamer Social Club site regularly.
