[UPDATED] Sea Of Thieves Drops Teases Before The Xbox Showcase

UPDATE: Learn about the announcement of the new Smuggler’s League, coming to Sea of Thieves as part of Season 17, Smugglers’ Tide.

The original article follows.

In the hours leading up to the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, Rare, the developers of the swashbuckling multiplayer game Sea of Thieves, have dropped a couple of teases. While rumours were swirling that we may see the studio’s next title, Everwild, at this event, it’s almost certain that Sea of Thieves will be at the Xbox Showcase.

Rare uploaded posts across their social media accounts, with just images accompanied by a “Skull” and “Cheers” emoji, respectively.

Here are the two posts that they have shared so far, clearly leading to an explosive conclusion!

The first post’s Alt text reads:

“A skull sits on top of a barrel alongside a couple of golden bottles and a few cannonballs. What appears to be a fuse is wrapped around these elements, going so far as to pass through the skull, entering by its mouth and then reappearing from its right eye socket. One end of the fuse is fizzing while the other disappears off to the left of the image.”

The second image’s Alt text reads:

“A crate of golden bottles sits on a beach. The crate they sit in appears to have oddly-cut gold elements attached to some of the wooden planks. Said crate also features a white logo comprised of a large diamond with a much smaller diamond attached to its bottom tip, and a half oval circling underneath with a spike-like protrusion at its lowest point. A fuse runs from right to left, its right side fizzing and the left disappearing off-screen.”

A third image has gone up in the last 30 minutes leading up to the Xbox Showcase.

The Alt text for this one reads:

“Multiple crates of golden bottles sit on a beach alongside an ammo box. The crates appear to have oddly-cut gold elements attached to some of the wooden planks and one is showing a white logo comprised of a large diamond with a much smaller diamond attached to its bottom tip, and a half oval circling underneath with a spike-like protrusion at its lowest point. A fuse runs from right to left, its right side fizzing and the left disappearing off-screen.”

Most won’t be surprised to hear that Sea of Thieves will feature at the Xbox Showcase 2025, as they have been present at nearly every Xbox event since the game was released in 2018. But this year is also the 40th anniversary of Rare, an iconic and much-beloved studio that has made memorable experiences for players since the 80s. If Rare were to celebrate this milestone, what better time to do it than at the Xbox Showcase, with one of Rare and Xbox’s most successful IPs?

The GSC team will be covering the Xbox Showcase later today, so be sure to check back for all the announcements along with whatever we see of Sea of Thieves!

Many more showcases are coming up over the next week, and the GSC team will be doing its best to cover as many as we can. Be sure to check back for more news from the upcoming Summer Games Fest, the Xbox Showcase, and more!
