After months of speculation, rumors, and voice actors all but confirming its existence, the Persona 4 remake has been announced at the Xbox Showcase. While many have speculated this for some time since Atlus registered the p4re.jp URL, this is the confirmation everyone has been waiting for. When Atlus was planning Persona 3 Reload, they registered the URL and 3 months later announced the remake. Fans hoped this would be an indication that the beloved Persona 4 would return as well.
It felt like these rumors were all but confirmed. First, Yuri Lowenthal shared on Bluesky that he would not be returning to voice Yosuke in a now deleted post. The voice actor confirmations didn't stop there with Erin Fitzgerald confirming they would not return to the role of Chie. Fans of the series will notice that this is the beginning of a pattern. Yosuke and Chie were the first two to join your Persona 4 party. This pattern continued with Amanda Winn Lee posting on X indicating she would not be returning to Yukiko, the third party member in Persona 4. The internet was buzzing, wondering if this was an elaborate marketing scheme or just voice actors lashing out at being unable to reprise the role.
Now we have details on the Persona remake titled PERSONA 4 Revival. The revival naming makes sense as the game has you go through TVs to explore the dungeons. There is little known but you can see the official reveal trailer below.
What was/is the original Persona 4?
Persona 4 was initially released in 2008 with an enhanced version titled Persona 4 Golden released in 2012. In P4, our main character (Yu) moves to the countryside of Inaba for a year. He’ll be staying with his uncle and cousin but we learn this dynamic can sometimes be at odds. His uncle is a cop and his cousin is a young girl often home alone to fend for herself. Of course, it isn’t as though we will always be there with her either. Shortly after the move, Yu learns about the midnight channel and the ability to jump into the TV. Yes, your portals to another world for investigations are TVs. Once you awaken to the power of Personas try and save friends and fellow classmates from a deadly fate. Of course, the best way to stop it is to solve who is behind these murders if you can.
In this entry of the Persona series, we see the the main characters come to terms with parts of themselves they previously rejected. The theme of Persona 4 seems to be self acceptance. It’s a theme that lands well and is timely for a new release. At the time of it’s initial release, Persona 4 was critically acclaimed. It was also noted how Persona 4 handled the treatment of queer characters in a mostly positive way. In 2025, there are a few scenes that could use a rework. Will we see this in the upcoming release?
