Drinkbox Studios, Developers of Guacamelee, Announce Blighted

There has been a cavalcade of announcements over the last few days, no surprise with the number of video game showcases we have had. On June 7, 2025, we had one of the busiest days the GSC team has ever experienced, covering all eight showcases, including Summer Game Fest, the Wholesome Direct, and the Future Game Show Summer Showcase. One title we’d like to highlight from Geoff Keighley’s SGF is Blighted, the new game coming from Drinkbox Studios, the developers of Guacamelee and Nobody Saves The World.

Here is all coverage of Summer Game Fest 2025: Full Schedule and Links to Showcases.

Blighted is an Action/RPG Souls-like Metroidvania which can be played both solo and with a friend using drop-in/drop-out co-op. This is how the game’s Steam Page describes Blighted:

“Battle your way through a psychedelic western nightmare to reclaim the memories of your people in this action RPG from the creators of Guacamelee! Harness the power of the deadly, reality-altering Blight and unravel the mysteries of a twisted world.”

You can watch the Blighted Announcement trailer below, or on the official Drinkbox Studios YouTube channel.

Like Drinkbox Studios’ previous titles, Blighted has a striking visual appearance, albeit this time set in a much darker world, and a grimmer premise. It was tradition that the dead were buried with a seed embedded in their brains. These seeds would grow into trees that would, in turn, produce fruit imbued with the memories of the dead. People would eat the fruit, and the knowledge of past generations lived on. That was until one called Sorcisto defiled the ritual, eating raw brains to gain vast knowledge and power. They went on to consume the player’s entire village and spread a deadly Blight across the world.

You play as the sole survivor, on a mission to retrieve the memories of your people, before you succumb to the Blight yourself.

Here are some of Blighted’s Key Features:

Intense combat: Combat in Blighted is nuanced and deadly. Carefully time your attacks to weave through enemies, chain together combos, and perform powerful finishers.

Harness your Blight: The player's Blight serves as a dynamic difficulty system that constantly changes the enemies, the player, and the world around them.

Consume memories: Absorb the brains of defeated bosses to gain their memories and become more powerful (and Blighted), widening your skillset and opening up new paths.

Unlock mysteries: Pay careful attention while exploring to unlock the many deep secrets of Blighted's world.

Topped off with a haunting soundtrack from the acclaimed composer Jim Guthrie (Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Below, and Nobody Saves the World), Blighted has very quickly found itself on our radar. While this game marks Drinkbox Studios’ first foray into 3D game development, it’s great to see that the team has not lost any of its wild imagination in the process.

Blighted is slated to release in 2026 on PC(Steam). The GSC team will continue to keep an eye on this upcoming surreal Metroidvania, so be sure to check back regularly.
