It's time to return to Midgar, confirms Square Enix, but this time on the upcoming Switch 2! You heard that right! Square Enix and Nintendo have confirmed that the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy will be coming to the Switch 2.
During this week's Nintendo Creator's Voice video, Naoki Hamaguchi (Director of the remake series) discussed the release of the revamped series to the upcoming Switch 2. With the improved technical specs promised, Hamaguchi stated that he felt the new console "would have enough power to run the remake series". Hamaguchi further elaborated on his years of game development which have led to his first project for a Nintendo-based game.
Hamaguchi also discussed his hopes of creating a stronger partnership with Nintendo and the Final Fantasy brand. This link has strengthened only over the past several years. The availability of Final Fantasy I through Final Fantasy X/X-2 and several other Final Fantasy titles, along with the inclusion of Cloud and Sephiroth in Smash Bros Ultimate, clearly establishes this bond.

Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024) were both released to Playstation 4 and 5, respectively. The developers later released them to PC gamers in 2021 and 2025, respectively. Both award-winning games fully revamp the 1997 Final Fantasy VII stories of Cloud and his companions against their nemesis, Sephiroth. The upcoming conclusion of the remake trilogy is tentatively slated for release by 2027.
In further Final Fantasy news, Square Enix has hinted at a future remake of Final Fantasy IX. This would possibly be in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the game’s initial release. Given the success of the remake of VII, this would be very advantageous of Square Enix!
