Legend of Zelda Movie Release Date Announced

When Nintendo announces a new way to connect with its audience, it’s a good idea to take action. Just one day after announcing the new “Nintendo Today!” app, they’ve used the platform for some exciting news.

The upcoming adventure film, “Legend of Zelda” will arrive in theaters on March 26, 2027. Wes Ball will be in the director’s seat with Derek Connolly earning the writing credit. Ball comes to the project after directing the Maze Runner series from 2014-2018 and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in 2024. Connolly joins the team with writing credits on Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, Star Wars: Episode IX, and Jurassic World: Dominion.

While there is little known about the film, this is some of the biggest news since 2023. Casting and other details are not yet available, but perhaps this news will appear on Nintendo Today in due time. You can be sure that even with little news, the countdown is on for many fans. In the meantime, fans can look to some of the hopes Ball has shared. In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, he shared hope for, “this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn't like Lord of the Rings, it's its own thing. I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.”

Ball also looks to make a more grounded Legend of Zelda movie when jumping into this universe. In a 2024 interview with Polygon, he was careful to say that an entirely mo-capped version The Legend of Zelda "probably isn't his choice”. It will be exciting to see what Ball, Connolly, and team cook up for fans in the next two years.

Fan castings for a Legend of Zelda movie have been a trend on the internet for years. Will there be an outcry of joy or anger when we learn who plays the titular character and our main hero Link? Are we seeing the Smash Brothers Universe come to life before our eyes? What are your fan castings for the film? Sound off below and we’ll keep you updated on future announcements!
