Rare Has The Next Five Years Planned For Sea Of Thieves

Sea of Thieves, the live service multiplayer pirate adventure game from the legendary studio Rare, is celebrating it’s 7th anniversary today!

Mike Chapman, the game’s creative director, took to social media to mark the occassion by thanking the fans and talking about the future of Sea of Thieves.

“Seven years ago today, the #SeaOfThieves journey began,” said Chapman, “and in many ways, it still feels like we’re just getting started.” Rare have been supporting Sea of Thieves with constant updates and seasonal changes, with the most recent being Season 15 titled ‘Wild Things’, which launched on February 20th. This most recent season is focused on hunting on the High Seas in its many forms, with the addition of two new Megalodon breeds now lurking just below the waves.

Chapman went on to say that even after seven years it still feels like they are “just getting started.”, and that they have “recently planned out what we [Rare] want the next five years to look like”. Sadly, no details were shared on those exact plans, but judging by how Rare have handled updates for Sea of Thieves in the past, I don’t think fans will have to wait long to find out.

Xbox had their own plans for marking the occassion, by announcing the new Sea of Thieves: X Edition, a version of the game exclusive to Xbox and available today. Here is the summary for this new addition from the official Xbox site:

“Dive into Sea of Thieves with this special edition, which includes a copy of the game with all permanent content added since launch, plus a comprehensive collection of ship sets inspired by Xbox and beloved Xbox titles, as well as a wide-ranging assortment of extra cosmetics.”

It is lovely to see Xbox and Rare highlighting arguably some of their best cosmetics for Sea of Thieves. For a time, the developers were making wonderful ship sets inspired by other Xbox IPs, including Halo, Gears of War, State of Decay, and Banjo Kazooie. Now new players to the Sea of Thieves can enjoy a treasure trove of goodies the moment they take their first voyage!

The Sea of Thieves: X Edition costs £79.99/$79.99, or your regional equivalent, and Game Pass subscribers can enjoy a 10% discount!
