33 Immortals: Beginner’s Guide

If you’re looking for help starting your journey as a Rebel Soul, you’ve come to the right place! Check out our 33 Immortals guide to help you understand the basics and become a bona fide Immortal!

You may have been cast down into the fiery pits of Hell by a cruel God, but that doesn’t mean your immortal soul has to accept it, damned or not! 33 Immortals is the new co-op action-roguelike from Thunder Lotus Games, developers of Spiritfarer and Sundered, where players must team up and fight through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven to defy God and change their destiny.

33 Immortals isn’t any old action-roguelike, the dev team have created an interesting blend of mechanics, new and familiar, that demand players work together or suffer the consequences. There is a brief tutorial to introduce new immortals to the game’s premise and gameplay loop, but we wanted to offer some helpful advice, and maybe a few tips, to prepare you for the path ahead.

Glossary

I Need A Weapon

You have the choice of four different weapons at the start of your journey to the pearly gates, each with it’s own mechanics and abilities. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, working as build types, and you may want to test them out in the Dark Woods hub to find the one that suits you. You can start upgrading weapons once you reach Feat Level 6 and have collected some weapon upgrade tokens.

Here is a quick breakdown of each weapon/skill set:

Sword of Justice/Tank (Melee)

  • Main attack is a slow wide three slash combo that can hit multiple enemies, and fill the Justice bar. Hold and release the attack button for a heavier attack that builds up enemy stun meters and staggers enemies, but also costs Justice.
  • One dodge available.
  • Special attack is a parry. Hold down the button to block all incoming damage. Counter with a Gavel Bash automatically when attacked while guarding. Holding the special attack button drains Justice.
  • Co-op Attack: Requires 3 Immortals – Grants participating Immortals a blue shield that negates a certain amount of damage.

Daggers of Greed/DPS (Melee)

  • Fast attack combo that fills the Greed bar on hit. Hold and release the attack for a heavier version that deals more damage and fills enemy stun meters. Fast and heavy attacks can be combo-ed.
  • One dodge available.
  • Special attack is a leap takedown that does more damage the more Greed the player has saved up, and is spent on a successful hit. You cannot take damage during a takedown.
  • Co-op Attack: Requires 2 Immortals – affected players benefit from Greedy Strikes, spawning Bones when they hit an enemy within a period of time. Their damage is also increased according to the amount of Bones they have.

Bow of Hope/DPS (Ranged)

  • Main attack fires an arrow in the direction you are facing. Hold down and release the attack button for a powered up shot with more damage and builds enemy stun meters. Arrows stay where they land and up to 6 can be fired before running out.
  • Two dodges available.
  • Press the special attack button to recall all arrows fired, hurting enemies they hit on the return journey.
  • Co-op Attack: Requires 3 Immortals – Fires volleys of arrows to the North for a period of time, hurting all enemies hit.

Staff of Sloth/Crowd Control (Ranged)

  • Main attack lobs a magic projectile a set distance, while holding and releasing the attack button fires multiple projectiles that build up enemy stun meters. Hits generate Sloth.
  • Sloth regens slowly over time.
  • One dodge available.
  • Special attack casts out a wave of purple magic in the direction the player is facing. Enemies hit by the wave are damaged and slowed for a period of time based on how much Sloth was consumed. The longer the special attack is held the wider the wave becomes.
  • Co-op Attack: Requires 3 Immortals: Casts a large version of the player’s stun wave to the right, heavily slowing enemies and hurting them.

Coordinated Attacks

Co-op Attacks are large team based abilities that can turn the tide of battle. Once a player has filled up their co-op bar in the bottom left hand corner of their UI, they can hold the right trigger (RT) to cast it. This creates glyphs that other players must stand in and activate, only when all glyphs are activated will the co-op attack happen.

Immortals Die Twice

Your immortality isn’t just a neat in game way to justify how you keep coming back to life after each death, but also plays a role during your runs in 33 Immortals. The first time a player dies in a run they turn into a mote of light that can only move and emote. Another Immortal can revive the fallen player to continue the fight before a time limit runs out.

When a player is revived their health is reduced by 75% by something called a Shattering Malus, a negative effect that can only be reduced by raising your resistance to it, using a Perk, or paying a large amount of Stardust at a Soul Shrine.

The second time you die it’s a tad more permanent, as you are expelled from the run and can only spectate.

Tip: Friends Bring Benefits

You would be wise to team up with others, and not just because it’s fun to play with friends! You can party up from the pause menu with three other players, which marks them on your map during a run. You can also use a Soul Shrine to revive any expelled party members (players who have died permanently).

As a bonus, your expelled party members will also be revived to join the boss fight as long as one party member makes it there alive.

Loot, Glorious Loot

There are several currencies to get familiar with in 33 Immortals, and it helps to know what each one is used for and where. A couple of these can be used in both the Beyond during a run and back in the Dark Woods hub, so be wary of what you are spending, Immortal!

A quick note: all loot is specific to each player, so there is no need to worry about sharing, just grab it!

Stardust

Stardust is earned by playing co-operatively. This includes getting co-strikes on an enemy (hitting the same target as other players), reviving a fallen player, and healing other players. It is one of the currencies that can be used in both the Beyond and back at the Dark Woods.

In the Beyond, Stardust can be spent at Soul Shrines to mend a shattered soul, returning a player’s max health to normal after being revived.

It can also be used in the Dark Woods to buy cosmetics for your immortal, including pets! Speak with Charon to see what he has to offer.

Bones

Bones exist and are used only in the Beyond, mostly found in chest and urns. Bones can be spent at Bone Shrines for healing or items like chest keys or teleportation stones.

Eternal Shards and Paragons

The currencies can be found out in the Beyond, mostly in chests and dropped by elite enemies, but can be used both during a run and back at the Dark Woods.

In the Beyond, the Eternal Shards are used at Soul Shrines to increase the defense of all players on that run.

Back at the Dark Woods hub they are both used to upgrade your Perks permanently, while Eternal Shards are also used to upgrade your weapons.

Dust

Defeated enemies drop purple globules of Dust. Collect it to fill your Dust Vial in the bottom right corner of your UI. Spend a full Dust Vial at Dust Shrines found in the Beyond to increase one of your characteristics (Attack, Vitality, Empathy) up to 5 times each during a run.

Dust is only found and usable in the Beyond. You will only get Dust from enemies you have hit.

Tokens

While out in the Beyond you’ll find different Tokens which give you access to their respective category. Keep an eye out for them and then visit each NPC to see what you have unlocked. There is a full tally of what you earned during a run at the end.

  • Yellow – Perk
  • Orange – Relic
  • Dark Gray – Cosmetic
  • Light Grey – Weapon Upgrade

Perks and Relics

When you return to the Dark Woods after a run you can spend your hard earned Eternal Shards and Paragons to upgrade your perks. You unlock these perks by finding Perk Tokens during your time in the Beyond. You start with just one slot to equip a Perk, and will unlock more as you reach certain Feat Levels.

Speak to the NPC Dante to check, equip and upgrade your Perks.

Relics are items you find and equip during your runs in the Beyond, normally rewarded from chests found in the Torture Chambers. Which ones you find are random, but once you reach Feat Level 8 you can raise your chances of finding certain ones before a run.

You need to find Relic Tokens during runs in order to unlock new Relics, and you can see collection by interacting with the book to the left of Beatrice in the Dark Woods hub.

Feats and Quests

The permanent progression is handled by Beatrice who offers Feats, challenges for you to complete while doing runs. Completing Minor Feats fills your Feat Level bar, and completing a full set of these completes a Major Feat, unlocking permanent stat improvements as well as currencies like Eternal Shards.

Completing a Major Feat also rewards you with a star fragment, and the category will level up with more challenges to undertake. Getting all fragments of a category’s star gives you that celestial body to add to your Crown of Immortality, a symbol of your devotion to the cause.

There are daily quests which reward you with more Eternal Shards on completing them. You can see your progress and collect your rewards at Noticeboards found at the beginning of the Dark Woods hub and near the Eternal Gate.

Tip: Training Is Rewarding

In the centre of the Dark Woods hub stands Beatrice with her giant blue sword, and just to the right of her is a standard you can interact with to go through some extra training. Completing each training scenario rewards you with Eternal Shards, making them a nice way to get a bunch early on for very little effort.
