PUBG Battlegrounds developer Krafton have confirmed that the game will be receiving an update for modern platforms in “late 2025” in its 8th Anniversary Roadmap.
Since launching on to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 last gen, the technology behind the game has lagged behind modern competitors in the battle-royale space including Apex Legends, Fortnite and Call of Duty Warzone. Whilst remaining incredibly popular on Steam, the peak of its popularity on console is some ways behind us.
With a new update to the game later this year, Krafton intends to bring the game up to date with Unreal Engine 5 visuals and more:
“In late 2025, PUBG will transition to current-generation consoles, bringing significant improvements to performance, FPS, map loading speeds, and overall graphical quality. This transition will optimize PUBG for modern hardware, addressing long-standing limitations and enhancing the overall experience for console players.”

What this means for players still playing on last-gen consoles remains unknown but with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 still taking up a significant number of respective ecosystem players, it would be surprising if support is curtailed.
Alongside the graphical update, Krafton have announced that PUBG will receive “major world updates” and fan favourite maps will be transformed. Krafton plans to bring notable gameplay improvements to the game including AI, gunplay, as well as new guns and vehicles.
