More layoffs have come today, this time from a beloved studio affecting one of the most anticipated shooters. Crytek, the makers of the CryEngine, Hunt: Showdown 1896 and the Crysis trilogy have announced they are laying off roughly 15% of their 400 employees.
The decision, which was a difficult one for the company has affected both their shared service business and game development. Crytek says they remain committed to working on Hunt: Showdown 1896 as it continues to grow as well as work on the engine they are perhaps most famous for.

Where this leaves their anticipated Crysis 4 however will likely leave fans disappointed. Crytek says development of Crysis 4 was "put on hold" in Q3 2024 and the developers were shifted to Hunt: Showdown 1896. While this doesn't necessarily mean Crysis 4 is outright cancelled it sounds like we won't see it for quite some time if we ever do.
Crytek has struggled over the years with which direction to take the Crysis series. Last year a very early build of a Crysis battle royale game leaked online. That game appeared to be scrapped in favour of Crysis 4 however. With Crysis 4 being announced in January 2022 it was a few years into development before today's announcement.
But Can It Run Crysis?
While the Crysis games are great, what made them and Crytek themselves so famous was the CRYENGINE. For the longest time the engine was considered the best looking and most demanding in gaming. There was often a saying anytime a powerful computer came out "but can it run Crysis?" While other developers have used it, it's never been as widely popular as other prominent engines.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, one of the biggest games of 2025, and one of the best looking games around, uses the CRYENGINE. If more developers start using it that will only further help Crytek and hopefully Crysis 4.
Gamer Social Club hopes all those affected with today's layoffs quickly land on their feet.
