New Details on Elden Ring Nightreign

On the back of the well-received Elden Ring expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, a further full Elden Ring expansion seemed unlikely. FromSoftware surprised hungry fans at The Game Awards in December, announcing co-operative roguelike spinoff, Nightreign.

We now have the first details about changes to The Lands Between in Nightreign and how gameplay will be mixed up with rogue-style elements.

Speaking to PC Gamer, game director Junya Ishizaki confirmed that the map will sometime witness, “large-scale changes to terrain in the form of procedurally appearing volcanos or swamps or forests”.

Swamps to make Soulsborne return

When describing the experience that will be on offer to players, Ishizaki went on to say “We wanted the map itself to be a giant dungeon, so players have the chance to traverse and explore a different way every time they play... You have to choose the boss you want to face at the end of the third day". For those unfamiliar with Nightreign, you and two co-op players will battle through a three-day loop, leaving the opportunity to approach bosses of your choosing all whilst traversing a battle royale-style shrinking play space.

Live Service Elements

Whilst procedurally generated content will certainly keep the game play loop fresh, FromSoftware have previously said that Nightreign "not what we'd consider a live service game". The change to a multiplayer focus certainly asks questions about how the title will launch then grow over time. If the title launches and remains vanilla, its plausible that fans will be fatigued by the three-day cycle routine rather quickly. However, with FromSoftware's almost unrivalled level of creativity, there is good reason to believe Nightreign will have long legs.
