Now that it’s been 10 days since the 10th annual The Game Awards, we're still wrapping our heads around all the awesome reveals (see our coverage here). As epic as the reveals for games like Borderlands 4, The Witcher 4, and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet were, a ton of great looking indies were given a spotlight during the The Game Awards Edition of the Latin American Games Showcase.
It was a fantastic showcase with every game flexing eye-catching graphics, incredible art styles, and inventive gameplay mechanics.
Here are the top ten games that I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the most from all the sweet indie goodness that these intrepid international dev teams had a chance to show off:
Wind Runners (Ludic Studios)
This roguelike aerial combat shooter from Brazil-based Ludic Studios blew my mind within the first 10 seconds of the trailer. The vibrant colors and environmental interactions as players dogfight in 2D pop off the screen spectacularly. I felt like I was witnessing a side-scrolling Starfox so I'm keeping both eyes on this one. There's no release date yet but you can download a demo and add it to your wishlist on Steam.
Shadows of Chroma Tower (Double Dash Studios)
Shadows of Chroma Tower looks like a very delicious first-person mix of dungeon crawling and action-RPG brought to life in a gorgeous, moody art style. It's super fun and fascinating to watch the developers, a Brazilian studio based out of Rio de Janeiro, stream their game and take note of balancing and gear for gameplay tweaks down the road. There's no release date but you can wishlist it on Steam.
Motorslice (Regular Studio)
Regular Studio, a studio based out of Brazil, showed off gameplay for their parkour adventure game Motorslice. You'll play as a girl exploring a brutalist megastructure (I love those) on a mission to destroy every machine inside. Inspired by games like Mirror's Edge and Prince of Persia, Motorslice will be available in 2025, but there's no firm release date yet. It's available to add to your wishlist on Steam.
Below, Rusted Gods (From South Games)
This psychological horror adventure from Argentina-based studio From South Games puts you in the shoes of an operator assisting a team exploring a hole that leads into the unknown. The trailer hooked me with the eerie, windowless liminal spaces to explore before revealing the 100% nightmare fuel enemies emerging from that hole that leads to who knows where. Below, Rusted Gods looks terrifying. A bit too terrifying. I'll be playing this one with the lights on. You can download a demo today and wishlist it on Steam in anticipation of its Q1 2025 release.
Subversive Memories (Southward Studios)
Made by a Brazilian solo indie game developer living in Japan, Subversive Memories is a survival horror game set during a military dictatorship in the "˜60s. You'll be exploring and scavenging the installations of an oppressive regime while avoiding what appear to be unsettling living shadows as you search for something? Someone? We’re not sure yet but we'll find out when this game drops next year. Subversive Memories looks like it's going to scratch that old school Resident Evil and Fatal Frame itch very nicely. You can wishlist it on Steam and enjoy a demo, too.
Knock Off: The Battle for Imagination (Mechaghidora Studios)
When I first saw the trailer for Knock Off: The Battle for Imagination, a fighting game from Mechagodzilla Studios, a team based in the Dominican Republic, I instantly perked up thinking I was unexpectedly seeing a game based on my favorite IPs growing up until I quickly realized that HELLO! They're knock offs! This fighting game looks fantastic and feels warmly familiar due to playable characters that are easily identifiable as knock offs (get it?) of our favorite action figures growing up and gameplay that reminded me of a certain mega crossover Sega Dreamcast fighting game classic. You can download a demo here.
Cold VR (ALLWARE LLC)
Since I just recently upgraded to the Meta Quest 3, I instantly locked in when I saw the trailer for COLD VR, a VR shooter from Argentinian studio Allware. The gameplay looked familiar and the trailer immediately acknowledging this head on ("I've played this already!") got a good chuckle out of me. Much appreciated. This bullet hell arena shooter will have you slowing down time the faster you move through incredibly colorful, eye-popping environments. The trailer veered unexpectedly into horror (!?) towards the end and that's always fun! You can wishlist COLD VR on the PlayStation Store and Steam.
Toni Island Adventure (Frolic Sudio)
The Nintendo Game Boy is tied with the NES as my first gaming device when I was a kid so I couldn't help but smile when I saw that retro Game Boy-esque handheld next to a cassette tape and floppy disk in the trailer for Toni Island Adventure from Brazil based Frolic Studio. In the game, you play as Toni, a sailor dog washed ashore on a mysterious island featuring a volcano. Sound familiar? Yes! And it's not a bad thing at all. No matter how much time goes by, dungeon crawling and puzzle solving in 8-bit will always be a good time. You can download a demo on Steam and wishlist it so you can play it when it releases on April 2nd, 2025.
Arashi Gaiden (Statera Studio)
Developed by Brazil-based Statera Studio and set in the Pocket Bravery universe, Arashi Gaiden will have you dashing and slashing in gory turn-based strategy action as Arashi, a ninja hired by his former master to retrieve three powerful Japanese relics while fighting through every ninja in his way. The gameplay looks incredibly addictive and I'm sure it's going to entertain me and wreck my productivity and time management in equal measures. Arashi Gaiden will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One X|S, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Mobile. You can also wishlist it on Steam.
The War in Chiapas (Bandprice)
From that first striking image followed by two characters speaking in night vision green over a radio, I instantly thought of that legendary game series famous for Tactical Espionage Action. I wasn't the only one, because earlier this year, Hideo Kojima-san himself retweeted the trailer for The War in Chiapas, a stealth action adventure game set in the "˜80s. The game's narrative is fictional but set in real-world events. You'll control a group of people who set out into the jungle to recruit soldiers to create an army with the intent of overthrowing a government while fighting against an overpowering paramilitary group determined to stamp out any rebellious activity. If you're looking for something stealthy and suspenseful, this is it. There's no release date but you can wishlist it on Steam.
