The developers at Studio [Notes.] have unveiled their next project, Cold Abyss, a single-player, first-person experience set on the ocean floor. Published by Neon Doctrine, the game casts players as an undersea technician fixing internet cables in one of the most remote and desolate places on Earth.

“A long day at work? Can't stand being around other people right now? Then how about you gear up and take a trip to the loneliest place on Earth?”
The press release summary for the game would have you thinking that Cold Abyss (despite its already unsettling title) is a relaxing jaunt across the sea floor. We are told there will be no enemies while you “enjoy your little trek through the benthic zone”, a place where “darkness is infinite and the silence deafening”. The game's Steam page takes it further, assuring players, "It's just you down here." Personally? I find that claim highly suspect. The marketing team clearly enjoyed themselves here, and who could blame them?

Take one look at the reveal trailer or screenshots, and it's obvious that Studio [Notes.] is ready to deliver chills. The game's low-poly visuals and gritty, "crunchy" audio embrace the PSX aesthetic"”a design choice that's seen a resurgence in horror games for its uncanny ability to heighten atmosphere.
From what the trailer teases, we'll maintain some connection to the surface world through a crackling radio, with a distant voice occasionally breaking the silence. But if years of playing video games have taught me one thing, it's this: never trust the person on the other end of the line.

The press release goes on to highlight some of the game’s key features, including an improved movement system and graphics from the original version, as well as new levels, collectibles, and an expanded story. There are two things you should know about me: I love collecting things in video games, and I’m a scaredy cat. Sounds like Cold Abyss will finally prove which is greater!
Fans of atmospheric horror"”possibly with a psychological twist"”should keep Cold Abyss on their radar. With its eerie premise and haunting visuals, this promises to be a dive worth taking.
