Binding Of Isaac Multiplayer: What You Need To Know

If you’re a hardcore Binding Of Isaac fan you may already be aware, that at the time of the writing of this, multiplayer is coming to the game on November 18th, officially supported by it’s creator Edmund McMillen and it’s team. Now if your wondering why I worded that a bit odd there’s a reason for that which will be a bit clearer after reading this.

I’ve noticed a ton of questions around this multiplayer drop and I’m going to attempt to answer the ones I can. Things like what it is, what it isn’t, how it’s available, and things in between. Let me be clear, I’m not Edmund McMillen, and I do not have a direct line to him. I am however, a big fan of his games who follows him on social media and would love to interview him someday (hint hint, if he should ever see this), so I know things. Those things include but are not limited to…

What Platforms Is The Multiplayer Coming To?

Alright. Let’s get what will likely be the most disappointing news out of the way first. As of now, this is PC only, in particular Steam. Will it ever come to console? It’s hard to say for sure, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for it. Edmund McMillan has said multiple times on twitter/X and on Reddit that he doesn’t know if it will ever come to console. In the end that will be up to the games publisher, Nicalis. We will get into why a bit later, but the delivery method of this “DLC” would make it pretty difficult, I would think.

Will I Need The Current DLC?

Yes, in order to be able to play the online multiplayer, you will need all of the game’s paid DLC up until this point.

How Much Is This Going To Cost?

Apart from the cost of the base game and the game’s paid DLC up until this point, nothing. Maybe that somehow changes down the line but for now that’s what we know. Also I’m not 100% sure why you need “All” the DLC if Afterbirth+ is what adds workshop support but maybe that becomes more clear when we can play.

How Many People Can Play At Once?

As of right now the multiplayer will be a simple 2-4 player co-op multiplayer. Also just so readers know there hasn’t been any mention of a versus mod or anything like that, at least that I’m aware of.

So What About Epic Games And GOG?

It’s possible it eventually comes to other store fronts but for now I wouldn’t hold my breath. While GOG (Good Old Games) has shown interest in mods like Fallout London recently, there’s been so sign that this is coming to that or Epic Games. In fact the GOG version is littered with reviews of people telling readers to buy the game on Steam as it hasn’t been updated on GOG since launch.

Is There Anything Else Coming In This Update?

Probably. I haven’t seen any details given out, only rumors which we try to stay from reporting too much on here but as you can see from the above tweet/X post the publisher, Nicalis, as basically spelled out this update will include more then just the multiplayer.

That Post Above Says Beta, What Gives?

Edmund McMillen has stated on his own Twitter/X profile that this is a beta update and that they will be taking player feed back and patching anything they need they need to after the fact. This would also be important should the Update/DLC/Mod (whatever you want to call it at this point).

That covers the most common questions I keep seeing come up in comments on the internet. A few more things is this is being labeled as a beta. That basically tells you there will be issues. Edmund and team haven’t said how they will receive player feed back for the Update/DLC/Mod that I’ve seen but these things are pretty easy to do through Steam Community posts so that’s my best guess.

Lastly as a big fan of The Binding Of Isaac I hope to see some of you guys in game when the multiplayer drops. In the mean time if your mother starts saying she can hear god and goes crazy on you, maybe don’t run straight for your bedroom. If you do and you find a trap door leading to the basement, particularly if you don’t have one, just jump out a window. See you guys in game on November 18th.
