Offworld Industries released Starship Troopers: Extermination into early access during May of 2023. Starship Troopers: Extermination received ‘Very Positive’ reviews on Steam and is currently sitting on 84% from 26 thousand reviews. With the announcement Starship Troopers: Extermination was leaving early access as well as getting a console release published by Knights Peak Interactive, I thought it was time to do my part and enlist in the Roughnecks.
He said it! He said the thing!!!

Starship Troopers: Extermination is part of the Starship Troopers film universe and if you are a fan of the cult classic bug stomping science fiction masterpiece you will not be disappointed. Starship Troopers: Extermination is a 16 player PVE first person shooter, with a special little gift for fans. There is a 25-mission solo campaign, voiced by none other than Johnny Rico himself Casper Van Dien. It is nothing crazy, just a series of objective based tasks that took me 2ish hours to complete. It almost felt like an extended tutorial.
You pick from 6 different sub-classes each fitted with unique special ability and set of weapons that need to be unlocked by successfully completing missions. You have your Heavy Troopers fitted with, deployable cover or shoulder mounted grenade launches, their weapons range from machine guns to grenade launches and shotguns. Your Assault Troopers have speed boosts and jet packs. They are equipped with Assault and Marksman Rifles. Lastly you have Support Troopers who are Equipped with Assault rifles, Shotguns or a Flame Thrower. The Support Troopers also have Medi drones and mobile Building tools, yip that’s right. Starship Troopers: Extermination has building!

There are several different game modes. Capture Territory, Collect Intel or Recourses and Horde mode. Each game mode comes to the thrilling climax of defending you position from hundreds of bugs, and this is where Starship Troopers: Extermination shines!
You reach your destination, a radio transmission plays through your helmet, you must survive until extraction arrives. Then all hell breaks loose. 16 players whip out a building tool and start crafting defences. It seems weird, and it kind of is, but when the base started to take shape a smile widened across my face and thoughts of the film started to creep into my thoughts. All right Roughnecks, Everybody Fights, No One Quits. If You Don’t Do Your Job, I’ll Kill You Myself!
The Arachnids start a few at a time, then they keep coming, and more come, then the bigger ones start coming, then even bigger ones appear. The defences are being overrun. The bugs are using the corpses of their fallen as ramps to get into the base. You see a fellow Marine fall, but their body is buried under so many bugs to can’t get the revive, you run out of ammo You are down to just your pistol, then you get the order to retreat. You run but the bugs are too fast and you fall as you watch the extraction shuttle leave without you. Mission failed.
This is how my first game went, what a rush. I had levelled up and got some new toys for my next fight, so back into the trenches I went.
Starship Troopers: Extraction is an amazing experience, but it isn’t perfect. The graphics are not great, the enemy AI has weird behaviours where they will run at you and almost clip and jump around making them very hard to hit and the bugs get stuck on the environment a lot but that does not take away from the boat loads of fun i am having.
There is customisation but it’s quite basic, blue overalls or red? What colour visor do you want?

Currently the servers are full being able to find a game usually in under a minute, however I have lost connection a couple of times during matches. Seeing as the matches usually last half an hour to the Horde Matches lasting a lot longer, loosing that amount of time to a server issue is very frustrating. Hopefully it gets fixed quickly.
I’m really excited to see where Offworld Industries take Starship Troopers: Extermination and I hope I can find a few Roughnecks to make a squad or two and take on some bugs.

Starship Troopers: Extermination is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S
