My Weekend With the Concord Beta

I’ve been excited to dig in to this game, however many are skeptical of the game. Given Sony’s new direction to start venturing in to live service games, its given us good reason to keep a close eye on the quality of games to come from them. Helldiver 2, which released earlier this year, was met with such phenomenal feedback, it ended up setting a high bar for the future live service titles to uphold. It feels like the pressure is now on Concord to pull through and show people that it is capable of providing a high quality live service experience.

I am beyond happy to report, that this game is the perfect fusion of Destiny 2 and Overwatch. With a Gaurdians of the Galaxy style coat of paint.

The beta starts you out with a taste of what the cinematic episodes could be like, it was short and gave little to go off of. It was so short and out of context that I wasn’t quite sure what was going on. I just assume it was placed there to give people an idea of what they can expect. I just hope the actual game has a little more meat than what was displayed in the beta.

With that being said, it gives you a great sense of what the characters are like and their dynamic as a team. I was worried going in to this game that it was going to be a knock off Gaurdians of the Galaxy. But you can tell from this small cinematic that these characters quickly take on their unique personality.

The only available mode in the beta is team deathmatch, that is until you reach level 6, then you unlock a more competitive mode where everyone is given 1 life.

You are able to choose a character from a rather large roster. Roughly the same size as overwatch. I dabbled with almost all of the characters, but landed on Lennox being my main. Each character is given quite the variety of weapons and abilites.

My greatest gripe with the game is that some of the “support” characters are underpowered because of their role. But are mostly given offensive abilities. While some of the tankier classes have abilities that feel more suited for a support role. Maybe some of the classes will make more sense to me the more I play, but for now, it just seems like its more “loadout” based than “class” based.

I mentioned earlier how this game is the perfect fusion of Destiny 2 and Overwatch. Well lets dig in to that now. I think its clear to see how this game takes heavy insperation from Overwatch, so I’d like to focus on the Destiny aspect of this game.

The character Haymar surprised me with how much she felt like playing a warlock from destiny. The way she hovered and her melee abilites felt at home. I’ve still been on my Destiny 2: The FInal Shape grind, so I quite literally played as my hunter before playing as Lennox in this game. Lennox is perfect for all my hunter mains out there. Its incredible how well they made this game feel in comparison. I know I keep comparing the two, but, it is the best way to describe just how well this game does gunplay.

I would also like to compliment the game on its challenges and rewards. Multiplayer games can sometimes start to feel unrewarding, but this game always made me feel like I was making some sort of progress.

I played this on steam and it ran beautifully! In fact, its one of the best optimized games I’ve played on PC in a while. I ran a buttery smooth 60FPS with no crashes. I of course ran in to some minor gameplay bugs, but nothing so major that I felt the need to take note. I do wish that they would add a little more options in the display settings.

Below are the specs to my 3060RTX laptop so you can see what I am running.

Processor"Ž2.3 GHz core_i7_11800h
RAM"Ž16 GB DDR4
Hard Drive"Ž512 GB SSD
Graphics Coprocessor"ŽNVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

That is all I’ll say for now on the game for now until I review it when it comes out on Playstation 5 and Steam, August 23rd 2024. Wishlist and pre-order here.
