One of the most important things we do here at Gamer Social Club is review games. All of our writers and editors are passionate gamer’s first and foremost and the opportunity to play games and bring our readers these reviews isn’t taken for granted. If our opinion on a game means something to even 1 person we will ensure our review is of the upmost honesty and quality.
Currently we only do written reviews. What that entails typically depends on the scale, scope and type of game. A smaller scale indie visual novel may only be 600-700 words, while a large, AAA scaled RPG may be 2000+ words. While many people simply look at a score, what is written is just as important. It helps our reader understand why we landed on that score and can give them an idea of what to expect from a game.
Of course each review is just one persons opinion and we want to emphasize that. While we stand behind each writer and their reviews it is their opinion, and we are just one outlet. We always encourage readers to look at multiple reviews and writers and find the one’s you simply trust in their opinion most. We definitely hope our outlet is one of those, but we shouldn’t be your only source!
Often times we will receive review codes early from publishers and PR firms. Whether we receive a review code from a company or we go out and purchase the game on our own accord, our reviews will always be honest. While we never like to score a game low, we are gamer’s who want all games to be great, our opinions won’t ever be swayed based on relationships with the publishers.
What we do want to show is that we typically do our best to pair our writers with games that they would at least be somewhat interested in. For example if a reviewer hates horror games but loves adventure games, we will likely not give them a horror game to review and will try and let them focus on adventure games.
We understand that some think if you are a massive fan of a certain franchise you may have a certain bias towards that series. While that is possible, we aim to be as unbiased as possible, and we think that someone having detailed knowledge of a series or genre can help them give a better understanding of what to expect in a game. That said, there are times at the site where writers may not be able to cover these games that they want and others will do so.
Our overall scoring system is a simple one. We score on a 1 to 10 scale and allow for half points as well. For example this means that a game could receive a score of 7.5 but not a score of 7.3 or 7.7. We think this keeps things simple for our readers and leaves our writers plenty of room to work with.
So what exactly is our scoring scale? We see a lot of times where someone will see a score in the 7’s or even 8’s and think the game isn’t good. That simply isn’t true, at least not here at Gamer Social Club. This below chart should help you better understand our scoring system and learn that a 7 is indeed good!
No game is ever perfect and we won’t label it as such. A 10 is the best of the best and a must play. One of the best games ever created. A game that will live in your head rent free for years to come.
A likely game of the year contender and one that should be on everyone’s radar. If you can get your hands on this game, you probably should.
Maybe not a game of the year contender but certainly has a lot to like. Has certain elements that may be award worthy ie a top tier story, but other elements aren’t quite as strong.
An enjoyable experience. You won’t regret playing this game but it might not stick with you much beyond your time with it. Has many good qualities while lacking elsewhere.
A game that has many flaws but is still enjoyable. Has 1 or 2 good qualities that certain players will enjoy, but held back by its flaws.
By definition quite literally an average game. Has significant flaws and some good qualities, but not going to be of interest to anyone but the most hardcore fans of a series or genre.
We’re now getting into the disappointing territory. If you squint you can see some good qualities here, but overall theres not much to like.
No redeeming qualities to be found here. Shouldn’t be on your radar unless your super curious.
This game barely runs and has no enjoyable qualities. Should have been thrown in the trash and started again.
If a game has received this score it is quite literally not playable from a technical standpoint. Broken and couldn’t even be finished. No redeeming qualities.
