FFIX Animated Series, The Black Mages’ Legacy, Officially Enters “In Production” At EuroVisual Studios

Though the Final Fantasy IX 25th anniversary celebrations have seemingly come to an end, fans still have something to look forward to with The Black Mages’ Legacy animated series officially moving to “in production” at French animation studio, EuroVisual Studios.

After the announcement that Cyber Group Studios, the studio originally working on The Black Mages’ Legacy series, would be shutting its doors, we learned that EuroVisual Studios would be taking over the project, as reported in the French media publication Ecran Total. (We mistakenly reported that the series was already in production as opposed to in development in our original article.)

While it is unclear when the project moved out of “in development” and whether the series is currently in pre-production, it is now listed on the EuroVisual Studio website alongside their other projects. What this likely means is that the series has moved out of the concept/pitching stage and now has funding/a budget, alongside actively getting a team together to start production.

The slide, which features the summary and a piece of original concept art for The Black Mages’ Legacy, also lists that the season will only have 10 episodes instead of the originally stated 13, keeping the 22-minute runtime per episode.

It is worth pointing out, if only to dissuade fans from getting the wrong impression, that all of EuroVisual Studios’ series have numbered seasons, so the fact that The Black Mages’ Legacy is listed as Season 1 does not imply subsequent seasons.

Set after the events of Final Fantasy IX, The Black Mages’ Legacy follows the lives and adventures of Vivi’s children, the last black mages in the world. After one of the siblings is found frozen like a statue in the tavern they run, the rest set off to discover if this is their father’s legacy catching up to them.

Given that EuroVisual Studios is keeping the listing updated on their website, it would indicate that the series is on track for its projected 2028 release.
