It’d be very easy to forget that Fortnite originally launched as a paid PvE shooter, dubbed Save the World back during the mid-Xbox One / PlayStation 4 era. What has become a household international name as a free-to-play battle-royale shooter, Fortnite’s routes are building bases to defend against hordes of enemies.
The Save the World mode has been hidden behind a paywall for some time – as well as via extortionately priced, and rare physical copies of the original base game. That is now due to change as finally as Save the World becomes F2P for all players on all platforms on April 16, 2026
Epic Games are offering existing players a reward for Save the World players who have paid to play the game including Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold which will be provided when the game goes F2P.
As someone who thoroughly enjoys the gameplay of Fortnite’s No Build mode, having the option to jump in with a squad and tackle waves of enemies with some friends, this sounds very exciting. The game’s crazy collaborations with the likes of South Park and even French music icons, Daft Punk have kept players coming back time and time again.
It is also worth noting that the game’s achievement and trophy lists are tied to the Save the World game mode, meaning you’ll finally be able to work towards a completion without paying for the game mode. Though, TrueAchievements have an expected completion time of 1000h+ for this one so it’ll take even the most dedicated players some time.
