You may want to sit down for this. Nier: Automata turns 9 years old next week. Platinum Games and Square Enix’s beloved action RPG that took players on a journey of existential crisis and thick android thighs has celebrated its anniversary early in a new video celebrating a massive sales milestone while also potentially teasing a sequel.
Nier: Automata first released on PlayStation 4 in Japan on February 23, 2017. The game was a collaboration between eccentric auteur writer/director Yoko Taro and Platinum Games, combining Taro’s complex and often dark storytelling with Platinum’s best in class action combat. A loose sequel to the 2010 game, Nier: Automata follows androids 2B and 9S as they explore a ruined earth after a robot invasion wipes out humanity.
With the game – that has gone on to influence other massive games such as Stellar Blade – turning almost a decade old, Square Enix has released a new video highlighting the game’s legacy, from the successful orchestral tours to the A-1 Pictures anime, and revealing that the game has sold over 10 million copies. The video concludes with the text “Nier: Automata to be continued…”, implying that Square Enix is working on something to follow up the game.
In many ways a Nier: Automata sequel just makes sense, especially following the remaster of its prequel, the wonderfully titled ‘Nier Replicant ver 1.22474487139…’. However, director Yoko Taro claims he has had multiple cancelled projects in the years following Automata, implying that a new Nier title wasn’t his first choice for work following the game’s breakout success.
Many of the game’s original staff have also left Platinum Games, which begs the question of whether the team will be involved too given its return to form with Ninja Gaiden 4 last year. The game’s designer, Takahisa Taura, left Platinum Games to found a new studio after directing Astral Chain. It’s possible that this team could be leading development given his role on Automata.
Either way, it’s now possible that a follow-up to Nier: Automata could be announced at any point, so stay tuned to Gamer Social Club as we anticipate whatever Square Enix is preparing.
Nier: Automata is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
