Konami Makes Return to RPG Roots with the Announcement of Rev. Noir

Rev. Noir was announced at Sony’s State of Play event and had many fans of Konami’s Japanese RPGs of old excited. What would the the studio that made Suikoden and Vandal Hearts have in store for us? Not a lot is known about this game as of yet. During the State of Play producer Nobuki Kadoi shed a little light on the upcoming project.

This title is under development by passionate members, including myself, who are long-time fans of JRPGs… Meeting comrades, growth, and heartfelt moments that define JRPGs. We are striving to place these elements at the core of our narrative. We hope you’ll be able to feel the excitement of a new adventure beginning.

The story is a fairly typical (utterly insane) JRPG setup that already has me itching to subject my family to dozens of hours of anime styled madness. In Rev. Noir you play a young boy with amnesia who, on the verge of death, is awoken by a “special” girl. Together they embark on a journey to save the world. Why? Well that’s because the world is currently is being decimated by some mysterious supernatural phenomenon known as “lightfall”.

Time to wake up you silly boy.

Normally light is great but in this universe it kills everyone it touches. What truth lays hidden in the memories of this young boy, Asch? How has he survived the killer lightfall? The game’s description itself mentions themes dealing with free will, the nature of fate, and the influence of Gods. So I’m personally expecting some heavy themes from this one.

The combat appears to be an action heavy affair, judging from the trailer shown at the event. It also seems to tease the possibility of extra party members. Unfortunately we don’t yet have a release date for the upcoming JRPG. We do know that it will see a PlayStation 5 release at some point.

We do not know much more about the game just yet, but it will definitely be one to watch. Let us know what you hope to see in Rev. Noir down below! Are you already excited for this game? Or do you need to see more before you pencil in this new RPG into your busy gaming schedule? When we learn any other details we’ll be sure to let you know, so keep a look out for any future updates on this exciting new title from Konami.

I moved from the US to Prague back in 2010. Since then I've been the main English teacher and coordinator at a few schools, got myself a family, wrote a couple of children's books with my wife, experienced a good amount of homelessness (best diet ever), and through everything, I've leaned on my love and passion for gaming. I've gone from impressing my dad on the Atari to my students calling me a middle aged gamer and now I get to share my passion with my kids. Best artform ever.
