While we have heard that Guerilla Games was going to be expanding their popular Horizon franchise, we were not quite sure what they had in mind. Today, the studio peeled the curtain back on at least one project, with a Monster Hunter like game titled Horizon Hunters Gathering.
Horizon Hunters Gathering is quite different from the mainline Horizon games. Described as a tactical co-op action game, up to 3 players will be able to team up using heroic Hunters to defeat the robotic monsters of the world.
As per a PlayStation blog post that accompanied the video announcement “Combat is tactical, reactive, and deeply skill-based, building on the tactical precision of the Horizon games while embracing the dynamics of team play.” The look and feel of the trailer certainly looks more like a hero shooter than the previous Horizon games.
Despite the multiplayer being front and center here, Guerilla has said that there will still be plenty of storytelling here as the expand upon the stories they want to tell in the Horizon franchise. The narrative campaign will be playable both with your co-op partners and solo with bot NPC’s helping you out if you prefer to go that route.

Hunters Gathering is also going to have a roguelike setup with perks to earn allowing you to shape your Hunters however you want. The different Hunters will allow for many different playstyles as well between melee and shooters.
Two Game Modes
Horizon Hunters Gathering will feature 2 different type of game modes:
- Machine Incursion: a high-intensity mission where waves of machines pour out from underground gateways, led by a formidable boss
- Cauldron Descent: a longer, multi-stage trial in which ever-changing rooms push Hunters to their limits, from brutal machine encounters to hidden doors that promise power and reward for teams prepared to open them
Both modes will be available in a playtest that is coming up at the end of February. Those who want to participate in the playtest can sign up for the PlayStation Beta Program here. The playtest will be available on both PlayStation 5 and PC.
