Nintendo Switch 2 Surpasses Wii U Sales Total in 7 Months, Top-Selling Games Revealed

In a new earnings report release, Nintendo have shared that the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to be the fastest selling Nintendo console of all time, as it continues to outpace its predecessor.

In only seven months on sale, the Nintendo Switch 2 has shifted 17.37m units, which surpasses the lifetime sales of the ‘Big N’s’ troubled hardware, the Wii U which achieved a poor 13.56m total sales in its 4-year lifecycle.

The original Nintendo Switch is now also the highest selling Nintendo console of all time, with a phenomenal attach rate for software. The Switch (1) has sold 155.37m units globally which takes it past the Nintendo DS which ended its lifecycle with 154m. Meanwhile, the Switch has sold 1,500.16m pieces of software – an almost 10/1 attach rate.

Currently, the Switch 2’s attachment rate is far behind the Switch’s, with 37.93m games sold. Mario Kart World is the best-selling game on Switch 2, unsurprisingly given it has been bundled with the console for a reduced price, and has now sold 14.03m copies – 37% of the console’s cumulative game sales.

Outside of Mario Kart World, the other highest selling Switch 2 games are the incredible 10 / 10 Donkey Kong Bananza which has shifted 4.25m copies, and Pokémon Legends Z-A which itself has shifted just shy of 4m copies. No sales numbers have been released for Metroid Prime 4, though it could be under 1.7 million copies given the lowest selling game Nintendo released figures for is Kirby Air Riders, which has sold 1.76m.

It’s going to be a big year for the Switch 2 with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, as well as Mario Tennis Fever arriving this Spring. Nintendo are well-known for bringing big hitter titles to their platforms within the early years of its lifecycle. We can only hope that a new 3D Mario and Zelda will arrive in 2026 – which will certainly push Nintendo’s console and software sales higher.
